Las Vegas is once again the host of some top UFC action this weekend. In the early hours of Sunday morning (UK time) the top bout of the night is going to happen.

Poirier and Hooker are two of the current top-ten ranked lightweight fighters in the world. So this should be some big showdown.

It’s not for a title, but the winner will certainly take a massive step forward to lining up one.

Dustin Poirier Preview – Can Poirier climb up the ladder for a title shot

Poirier is a former UFC interim Lightweight champion. He claimed that position with a win over Max Holloway in April last year.

But he was up against the best in the world back in September in his last fight.

He squared off against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 as a massive underdog for the bout. He lost to a submission.

The American is currently ranked NO 4 in the world and will know that he can’t take his weekend’s opponent lightly at all.

The “Diamond” has a 25-6 career record and 12 of those wins have been by a knockout.

The southpaw fighter is coming in with a 50% striking accuracy. This is completely about him working his way back up the ladder.

He needs to get back to the position he was in when he got that shot against Nurmagomedov.

Poirier had been on a four-fight winning streak before that, within that sequence stopping Justin Gaethje by a TKO in April 2018.

Gaethje is the next one to challenge Nurmagomedov which will happen at UFC 254.

Dan Hooker Preview – Big shot for Hooker in title eliminator

This is a huge chance for Dan Hooker to make a move in the standings. There are similarities between the two fighters.

There are moments when he has blown his lines, notably when he was stopped by Edson Barboza in December 2018.

But Hooker has responded with three straight wins, only one of those by knockout however.

The last fight that he had is well worth revisiting. That was against Paul Felder in February this year.

It was an absolute bruiser of a battle, non-stop action right through the five rounds, which Hooker took on a decision.

That was some massively gruelling work that Hooker put in there, and it was the biggest test of his stamina in his career.

The win moved him on to 20-8 for his career, ten of those victories happening by a knockout.

That’s where Felder could take his chance. It may have to come down to his standing power, as Poirier could get the advantage down on the floor.

But at the end of the day these two look really evenly matched up. 17 of the “Hangman’s” 20 career wins have been via a stoppage.

So he’s not to be taken lightly at all in his one and he may stick around for a while and we feel it’s worth looking for a longer fight.

Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker Betting Advice

We don’t see this being settled early. The two fighters look as if they are about to head into a battle of endurance more than anything.

The win should be recorded by Poirier at the end of the day and if it comes via a stoppage, it’s likely going to be later on, so a round 3 option fits nicely for the fight.

Key Facts – Dustin Poirier vs Dan Hooker Betting Tip

  • Dustin Poirier is 3rd all-time in UFC Lightweight for knockout wins
  • Dustin Poirier is ranked 5th in the UFC
  • Only 3 of Dan Hooker’s career wins have been by decision

It was impressive the way that Hooker stuck around through 5 rounds of a brutal battle in his last fight in February.

However, his excellent career record looks fantastic on paper, but when you break down the level of opposition, he hasn’t faced a much of the top talent as Poirier has done.

That extra experience at the top level that the “Diamond” has, along with a chin that really isn’t all that suspect, having only been KO’d twice in his career sends us towards a Poirier by KO, TKO or DISQ at 11/8* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 04:17 GMT on Friday, 27th June 2020).
