Dynamo Kiev join the third qualifying round of the Champions League as they finished runners-up in the Ukrainian Premier League to title winners, Shakhtar Donetsk, who automatically qualified for the group stage.
Dynamo Kiev have got their new Premier League campaign off to a flying start as they’ve registered back-to-back wins over Chornomorets and the aforementioned Shakhtar Donetsk, with the latter being a 1-0 win away from home which will give tonight’s hosts a big boost ahead of this first leg.
However, Kiev don’t boast a particularly impressive record in this competition though as they’ve collected just one win from their last eight ties, although the bulk of these games were in the group stages of the Champions League.
Swiss outfit, Young Boys, also join the Champions League at this third qualifying round after they finished runners-up to champions Basle at the end of the last campaign, but the title race wasn’t even close as they were 17 points adrift of Basle!
Young Boys made it through to the play-offs of the Champions League last season, but they’ll be wanting to forget their last appearance in this competition as they were thrashed in no uncertain terms by German outfit, Borussia Moenchengladbach 9-2 on aggregate.
Just two wins from their last eight ties overall tells its own story for tonight’s visitors, and five defeats from their last six on their travels looks to have Young Boys on the back foot here in this first leg.
