What sort of resistance can Dynamo Kiev, a club featuring at this stage for the first time in four years, provide inside NSC Olimpiyskiy?

Dynamo Kiev Preview – Fine start to 2020-21 can breed confidence?

No longer considered as the dominant force in Ukrainian football – with that honour bestowed on Group B participants Shakhtar Donetsk, who have won eight of the past ten national league titles as well as each of the last four – this is nonetheless a club synonymous with representing Ukraine on the continental stage. So while this is a first group stage appearance since 2016-17, it is their 17th overall.

That European pedigree will need to count for a lot in an ominous looking group. A group most expect them to be competing for third place with Hungarian champions Ferencvaros. Any points garnered against the other two teams have to be considered a bonus, and they won’t exactly be brimming with confidence about their immediate chances having fared poorly versus similar opposition in the past.

On the six previous occasions Dynamo Kiev have hosted Italian opposition, they have won only once (W1 D2 L4). Head coach Mircea Lucescu, who can count a brief stint at Inter Milan among his long list of previous managerial posts, has every right to feel bullish about his side’s chances on Tuesday however. Dynamo are still to lose in any competition in 2020-21 (W8 D2), including three wins in five at their NSC Olimpiyskiy.

Juventus Preview – More trouble ahead for Ronaldo-less Juve?

Once eliminated from last season’s Champions League in the round of 16, by a middling Lyon side no less, there was an air of inevitability about The Old Lady dispensing with former manager Maurizio Sarri. The appointment of Andrea Pirlo to fill the void caught most by surprise, however, and Tuesday sees the former Bianconeri midfield legend make his managerial bow in the competition’s group stage.

Considering the start to the new campaign has been far from convincing, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that progression from a generous group is not as straightforward as some are predicting. Particularly as Pirlo must do without his talisman for this Group B opener. Cristiano Ronaldo has been in quarantine since last week and has missed the last two matches (one for Portugal) as a result.

The absence of Ronaldo was keenly felt on Saturday, meanwhile, as Juventus ambled to a 1-1 draw away to newly-promoted Crotone. Their second successive stalemate since opening their accounts in 2020-21 with a 3-0 victory at Juventus Stadium against Sampdoria. However their recent record in this competition is strong, particularly as the away side, winning 8 of the last 12 group stage away fixtures.

Dynamo Kiev Vs Juventus Betting Advice

Anything less than progression from this group would be considered an unmitigated disaster as far as Juventus are concerned. They are huge favourites to get up and running here. However, it might not be a simple task. Complicating matters for Andrea Pirlo is the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, a player with more goals than anyone in the history of the competition. Not to mention some indifferent early season form.

Dynamo Kiev vs Juventus – Key Facts

  • Runners-up in the Ukraine Premier League in the past four seasons, Dynamo Kiev overcame AZ Alkmaar and Gent to qualify for this season’s group stage.
  • Perennial Serie A champions Juventus are bidding to progress out of their group for a seventh straight season in the competition, winning five of six group games in 2019-20.
  • Juventus have won each of the last three head-to-head encounters, all in this competition, since a 1-1 draw in their very first meeting in 1998.

The hosts, by contrast, are in decent shape. Dynamo Kiev have won eight of ten matches so far in 2020-21 to both qualify for the group stage and top the Premier League standings in Ukraine. This momentum should bode well for them troubling Juve, at the very least. Therefore the hosts are backed to contribute to the scoring against a visiting side boasting a couple of home clean sheets this season but none so far in two away outings.
