Preview: Having begun the new season with successive victories, FC Ural find themselves sitting pretty at the summit of the Russian Premier League. Their opponents, meanwhile, have only collected a solitary point thus far and will be reeling after last weekend’s home loss to ten-man Rubin Kazan. Will Dynamo Moscow respond with a win inside their VTB Arena, or can FC Ural continue their positive momentum in Moscow?

Dynamo Moscow Preview – Winless streak a significant negative?

Their obsession with drawing games was brought to an end by Rubin Kazan last week, as Dynamo Moscow slumped to their first defeat of the new Premier League season despite playing with a numerical advantage for the entirety of the second period. The good news is that they have been provided with another fixture at home to try and chalk up a first win, against a favourable opponent no less.

This particular fixture has brought Dynamo a lot of joy in recent times, beating Ural on four of the five occasions they have met inside the VTB Arena in Moscow. None were more emphatic than the most recent, either, as Dinamiki scored four times without reply in December of last year. That was one of five victories earned on home soil throughout the previous campaign, where wins were certainly more forthcoming.

Dynamo struggled in last season’s Premier League and barely avoided the relegation play-offs, but a key reason as to why they did was some better showings at home. Just six wins overall becomes five in total when playing as the hosts, with their record at home reasonable: W5 D6 L4, GF17 GA10. They were successful in holding CSKA Moscow, Krasnodar and Arsenal Tula to draws on their own patch and even inflicted a surprise defeat on eventual champions Zenit (W1-0).

So they are clearly capable at home. Whether that disappointing performance last time out has badly affected their already fragile self-belief and confidence – they had gone their last seven league fixtures without winning prior, which became eight (D6 L2) – remains to be seen.

FC Ural Preview – Table-toppers with the momentum?

It remains early days, and they are still to beat anyone of note, but FC Ural have started the new season on fire after recording back-to-back victories over FC Ufa (3-2) and Akhmat Grozny (3-0). However, both outcomes were at home. The challenge now is to take this newfound confidence and momentum on the road, to a stadium which doesn’t hold very many fond memories.

On their previous five league visits to Dynamo Moscow, Ural have only tasted success on one occasion – that being a 1-0 win back in July 2017. The other four trips all saw them leave with nothing, with the most recent a 4-0 thrashing last December. That was one of several heavy defeats suffered on their travels during the last league campaign, which is an obvious concern, although their record away from home on the whole was fairly respectable.

Ural fell to seven defeats on the road in 2018-19, but did manage to register as many victories as they did back at home (away record last season: W5 D3 L7, GF15 GA27). The problem being when the team nicknamed Uraltsy did lose away from home, more often than not it was in a convincing manner. CSKA Moscow (4-0), Ufa (4-1) and Zenit (4-1) joined Dynamo in going big at home to Ural last term.

However, some notable victories at the likes of Lokomotiv Moscow (1-2) and Spartak Moscow (1-2) are an indication of what this team remains capable of away from home. Unpredictable, yet capable.

Dynamo Moscow V FC Ural Key Facts:

  • A 1-0 loss to Rubin Kazan last time out extended Dynamo Moscow’s winless run to eight league matches (D6 L2).
  • Back-to-back victories in the new season for FC Ural extended their unbeaten league run to five games (W3 D2).
  • Four of the previous five league meetings in Moscow have been won by Dynamo Moscow, who won the most recent of these 4-0.

Betting Summary

It is difficult to like much about Dynamo Moscow at the moment, and that is accentuated by their short odds once again. No win in their last eight Premier League matches (D6 L2), and unable to even hold out for a point last time out at home to a Rubin Kazan side that won once on the road all of last season, who were also down to ten men for an entire half.

There is enough momentum behind the visitors to make them worthwhile chancing. Successive wins to begin the new term and, stretching back into last season, it is now no defeat in their last five league games (W3 D2) – and just two in their previous eleven (W6 D3 L2).

Last season’s corresponding fixture saw Dynamo Moscow run up a huge score to win 4-0 and while they could feasibly repeat that, there is no logical argument to suggest they will. Confidence should be flowing through the visitors, who have enough scope in their current odds to get both the away win and draw onside.
