Preview: Their clashes during the 2018-19 Russian Premier League both ended in 1-1 draws, with these pair of draw specialists predictably canceling each other out. It was appropriate, therefore, that both begun the new season in a similar vein with Dynamo Moscow drawing away to Arsenal Tula and Rubin Kazan sharing the spoils at Lokomotiv Moscow. Is there any separating them in this match?

Dynamo Moscow Preview – Can Dynamo avoid seventh consecutive draw?

Football is famed for its unpredictability. That doesn’t seem to apply to Dynamo Moscow, though, whose 1-1 draw at Arsenal Tula on the opening weekend continued a love affair with drawing Premier League matches. That was their sixth league game drawn in succession, on the back of the five in a row managed at the very end of the previous campaign.

No team in Russia’s top league recorded more draws last season than Dynamo (15), with nine of them score draws – which makes a small wager on Draw & Both Teams to Score, at 9/2 with Sportingbet, potentially worthwhile. There were slightly less stalemates at the VTB Arena however, the home of the “White-Blues”, who were more adept at winning games of football when in front of a home crowd.

The Moscow club collected five of their six league victories in 2018-19 on home soil, and it was because of their improved displays at home that they were just about successful in fending off the threat of relegation. Their overall record of W6 D15 L9 was barely good enough to see them avoid a relegation play-off spot, finishing one position and five points clear.

More of the same at home, if not better, is required this season if they’re to retain their Premier League status for a third year running, having only returned to the top tier a couple of seasons ago. Unfortunately, though, this has been a fixture they haven’t prevailed in since 2012. Four of the previous five league encounters ended in draws, which shouldn’t come as a huge surprise really.

Rubin Kazan Preview – Terrible travelers Kazan seeking rare away win?

Once upon a time, their team were winning championships and competing against the very best sides in Europe. That golden period in the club’s history is a distant memory at the present time. Recent campaigns in particular have been tough on supporters, who must have resigned themselves to watching a team seemingly stuck in decline. The past four seasons has seen them finish no higher than 9th, with 2018-19 their worst collective performance since returning to the top tier back in 2002.

To finish way down in 11th was a new low for the 2008 and 2009 Premier League winners. The problems last time around were similar to that of their opponents, in that they drew far too many matches. No side drew as frequently as Kazan, whose tally of 15 draws was identical to that of a Dynamo Moscow side they drew both league meetings 1-1 with. That same scoreline is 6/1 with Sportingbet.

Normally a draw would be worthy of frustration for Rubin but away from home it is probably something to be cherished, as this team seriously struggled outside of Kazan. Their only triumph away from home last season was, somewhat ironically, against the eventual champions. A sensational 2-1 victory in St Petersburg, against Zenit, was arguably the most surprising outcome of the entire season.

The unlikely hero that day was defender Yegor Sorokin, with the center-back remarkably popping up with both goals. The 23-year-old is 22/1 with Bet365 to get on the scoresheet against Dynamo. Considering he netted four times on the road, that could be a decent bet for smaller stakes. Although, manager Roman Sharanov will likely settle for anybody scoring at this rate seeing as his team concluded the last campaign failing to even score in four of their final six away fixtures.

Dynamo Moscow V Rubin Kazan Key Facts:

  • Dynamo Moscow have drawn each of their previous six Russian Premier League fixtures.
  • Rubin Kazan toiled on their travels last season, winning only once away from home against champions Zenit.
  • Both league meetings between these two teams ended in 1-1 draws last season.

Betting Summary

The bet with the strongest claims is also the bet with obvious claims. These teams racked up more draws (15 each) than any teams in the Russian Premier League last season, while both meetings between the two ended 1-1. Another draw is still attractively priced however, and it is only appropriate we get on board with this trend.

Out of the two, Dynamo Moscow feel the likelier to clinch victory. Their figure of five home wins is a significant upgrade on the solitary away win Rubin Kazan offered up. Both Teams to Score would have landed in both league encounters with one another, and that is a 7/5 shot with Sportingbet. Neither are exactly prolific, however.
