Edinburgh City narrowly missed out on promotion to League One last season but will be ready to go again as they welcome a Hamilton team still smarting from relegation to the Championship.

Edinburgh City Preview – Could League Two Edinburgh City shock their visitors?

Gary Naysmith has only been in charge of Edinburgh City since March but he’s already been involved in high-pressure games with his team making the promotion playoffs and reaching the final. They played Dumbarton over two legs but it was a narrow 3-2 defeat on aggregate and consigned City to another year in League Two.

City had a really indifferent end to their last campaign with four defeats in their last six league games, it didn’t make a difference to their league position as Queens Park were runaway leaders but Naysmith knows he has to get a fast start as the club are one of the favourites to be promoted this time around.

Our betting prediction
Edinburgh City to win to nil
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Thursday 8 July)

Edinburgh City have yet to go beyond the group stage of the League Cup which isn’t overly surprising considering they are relatively new to the League pyramid and are always going to be up against it when playing against teams in the leagues above them.

Their section this time includes Ayr United, Albion Rovers and Falkirk in addition to Hamilton. So it’s arguably a decent chance to pick up some victories with no Premiership team in the section but they know they are underdogs along with fellow League Two team Rovers.

Hamilton Preview – Will Hamilton dust themselves off after relegation and collect three points?

Hamilton are preparing themselves for a season in the Championship for the first time since 2014 following their relegation. Brian Rice was unable to prevent them dropping out the Premiership having punched above their weight for each of the prior six years. Eventually having the smallest budget in the top division told and they will now look to bounce back at the first time of asking.

Rice will again put his faith in youth and hope to develop more of their academy talent. Many of whom have experience from the last couple of years and will be at the club for the coming campaign.

Due to how competitive the Championship is Rice will look at these League Cup matches as the perfect opportunity to build his team’s fitness and sharpness ahead of the first league game against Raith Rovers at the end of the month.

Hamilton were a disappointing fourth in their section last season with only Albion Rovers below then. Teams from the Championship and League Two finished above them and it’s definitely something which they will hope to do better in this time around. They’ve actually only got out their section once in the last four years.

Edinburgh City vs Hamilton Betting Advice

Last season didn’t finish like either of these teams would have wanted it so this is a chance for them to get the new campaign off to a more positive beginning. The visitors are going to be in something of a transition. They’re also not known for fast starts of any real success in cup competitions.

That will give Naysmith and his players some hope they can get three points and at the same time causing a bit of a shock.

Key Facts – Edinburgh City  vs Hamilton Betting Tip

  • Edinburgh City remain a League Two team having lost in the promotion playoff final last season
  • Hamilton are in the Championship for the first time in seven years following relegation
  • The teams last met in this competition back in 2016 when Hamilton were 4-2 winners

There may be two divisions between the clubs but Hamilton are there to be shot at in this case. Edinburgh City’s home record is not great in the League Cup but I’m willing to take a chance on them in this one.
