Preview: We could be in for some spectacle inside Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde, Cameroon, on Sunday. You sense there may be more to come from an Egypt which has scored only twice at these finals so far, and they may need their star man Mohamed Salah to start firing if they are to keep pace with this exciting Moroccan outfit.

Egypt – More needed from star man Mo?

A third successive clean sheet helped seven-time winners Egypt book their place in a record 16th Africa Cup of Nations semi-final. Carlos Queiroz was forced to change his goalkeeper late into the round of 16 contest with Ivory Coast, though. The Elephants had impressive in the group stage, scoring six times, but were limited to half-chances by a Egypt defence which has now gone 360 minutes without conceding.

Much of the talk – or hype – pre-tournament was how their talisman would translate his superb form at club level onto the biggest stage in African football. A return of one goal in four matches suggests there is more to come from Mohamed Salah, who has played the role of provider to great effect but been badly let down by misfiring team-mates. The Pharaohs, meanwhile, are yet to notch more than once in any game.

Key Stat: Each of Egypt’s last six matches saw Under 1.5 Goals, while none of their last seven saw more than two (excluding extra-time).

Morocco – Atlas Lions being overlooked for outright success?

If I had to pick my outright winner ahead of the semi-finals, it would be Morocco. Even prior to the tournament getting underway they held outstanding claims. Only Senegal – who are the bookies favourites to lift the trophy – came into the finals with a higher ranking, while only Algeria – who had a disastrous group stage – were on a longer unbeaten run beforehand than the 27 of The Atlas Lions.

This has since grown to 31 with three wins and a draw in Cameroon. They rank second for goals scored so far, with seven, netting multiple times in each of their last three encounters. And they are a team that can dig deep and find another gear or two when called upon. As demonstrated in both the 2-2 draw with Gabon – twice coming from behind – and 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Malawi in the last sixteen.

Key Stat: Marauding full-back Achraf Hakimi has scored direct from a free-kick in each of his last two Africa Cup of Nations matches, becoming the first player to do so twice in the same tournament since 2008.

Egypt Vs Morocco Betting Advice

This is a fascinating match-up, owing much to their contrasting style if anything else. However, at the heart of it both teams are built upon solid defensive foundations. Since the beginning of 2021, Egypt have recorded 11 clean sheets from 19 games while for Morocco it is 17 from 24. So this could be a similarly tense affair to that of Egypt’s previous round encounter with Ivory Coast, which ended goalless.

Egypt Vs Morocco – Key Facts:

  • Morocco are ranked 17 places higher in the latest FIFA Rankings than Egypt. Moreover, it was the Atlas Lions who prevailed in their most recent head-to-head: 3-1 in August 2017.
  • After eleven consecutive meetings seeing one or no team score, the previous two encounters between the sides has produced both teams scoring.
  • However, these are two of the meanest defences on the continent. Egypt keeping 11 clean sheets in 19 games since 2021, Morocco 17 from 24 across the same period.

Yet with players like Mohamed Salah, Achraf Hakimi, Sofiane Boufal and Youssef En-Nesyri on the pitch, opposing goals at meagre odds (under 2.5 goals is trading as low as 1/3) holds little appeal. Instead, keep it simple and back Morocco. What they lack in AFCON pedigree they make up for with greater potential match-winners among their ranks, while they have shown already they can defy adversity at these finals.
