Preview: The Ipura Stadium, in Basque Country, will host Thursday’s pivotal La Liga encounter between Eibar and Real Betis, two teams whose ambitions differ greatly but are compelled to do everything in their power to pick up three hugely important points.

Spanish La Liga Betting at Betfair

Eibar – Third straight win would revive survival bid?

The club from the Basque Country have been dining in the last chance saloon for the past few games now, and are seemingly thriving as a consequence. Sunday’s late show in Getafe, snatching a potentially vital win courtesy of an 89th minute converted penalty, made it back-to-back wins for the first time all season for Jose Luis Mendilibar’s beleaguered side, who simply refuse to raise the white flag.

Two points now separate Eibar (W6 D11 L18), in last place, from safety. However, as admirable as recent performances have undoubtedly been – after all, they had gone sixteen games without a win beforehand (D4 L12) – harder assignments await. After hosting the team currently seventh (Real Betis), Los Armeros head to Valencia and the Mestalla before welcoming title protagonists Barcelona in the final round.

Those recent triumphs will inspire belief, though, not least the comprehensive 3-0 scoreline in which fellow strugglers Alaves were dispatched last time out on home soil. A win which marked their first at the Ipurua Stadium since 3 January, halting a barren seven-match spell on their own patch. Now, they go in search of successive La Liga home wins for the first time in sixteenth months.

Real Betis – Are Verdiblancos back to winning ways?

With three more rounds remaining, Real Betis (W14 D9 L11) are in control of their own destiny with regards to securing a top-six finish that would see them qualify for next season’s Europa League group stage. This was only recently made possible, however, following Monday’s 2-1 victory against a spirited Granada at Estadio Benito Villamarin. Los Verdiblancos’ first win in La Liga since the middle of March.

A six-game drawing sequence directly preceded the Granada result. That it took a late winner, from an indirect free-kick taken no more than six-yards from goal, spoke volumes as to their recent toils. Both goals, meanwhile, came from the boot of Borja Iglesias. A summer signing from Espanyol, the 28-year-old striker overtook Sergio Canales as the team’s overall leading goalscorer in 2020-21, with nine.

Away from the Benito Villamarin, Betis remain winless in four La Liga outings (D3 L1) since edging Cadiz 1-0 in late February. Their form on the road has been much improved in the second halve of the campaign, though, with only one of six away defeats sustained since the turn of the year (W3 D4 L1 – away record in 2021). Despite a measly 0.6 goals-per-game ratio across their last five away league games.

Eibar Vs Real Betis Betting Advice

Despite this contest pitting the teams in 20th and 6th, respectively, against one another, it is the supposedly inferior outfit who arrive in arguably the better frame of mind. First and foremost, rock-bottom Eibar can boast more wins in their last two La Liga games (2) than Real Betis can in seven (1). Furthermore, the hosts should be fresher, if only marginally, benefiting from an additional days recuperation.

Eibar Vs Real Betis – Key Facts:

  • Both teams are having issues finding the back of the net. Eibar have not scored more than once in 17 of their previous 18 league games, while for Betis it is 8 of the last 12.
  • A low-scoring encounter could be on the cards therefore. None of the past six meetings in La Liga between these sides featured three or more goals.
  • Under 2.5 Goals has landed 66% of the time when Eibar are at home this season. A similar rate (60%) to that of Real Betis when they are away from home.

Circumstances dictate that Eibar need to win this to have a realistic shot of staying up. Confidence will be high after successive wins, though they were winless in the 16 games, including five straight defeats, before wins over Alaves and Getafe. Real Betis are a significant upgrade on those. However, with only one win in seven (D6), and none in their last four away (D3 L1), the visitors are not to be trusted either.
