Preview: A chaotic summer, with no shortage of new arrivals or big name departures for both clubs, means this match-up between Frankfurt and Hoffenhein could be tricky to predict. Last season’s corresponding fixture did end with the home side claiming maximum points though, with Frankfurt earning a dramatic victory courtesy of a 96th-minute winner. Will there be more late drama inside the Commerzbank-Arena?

Eintracht Frankfurt Preview – How significant will absence of strike duo be?

For much of last season it was one of great promise as the team did its best to remain in contention for a European finish in the league whilst simultaneously negotiating as many rounds as it could in the Europa League. In the end, however, that promise frittered away as Frankfurt’s league form in particular fell by the wayside, no doubt hamstrung by their endeavours in Europe where they would also eventually come up short, exiting at the semi-final stage to Chelsea on penalties.

To compound matters, during the summer the club allowed themselves to be seemingly weakened by sanctioning the departures of their two primary goal-getters. Between them, Sebastien Haller and Luka Jovic accounted for 32 of the 60 goals Frankfurt scored in the league last term. Yet both strikers were moved on, albeit for significant fees that would have earned the club a sizeable profit. Very little of that return, though, appears to have been reinvested back into the team.

So, potentially anyway, Die Adler could be a weaker proposition. Which, if true, would be a big concern, as the team didn’t exactly end last season like one that was all set to kick on and improve further. Failure to win any of their last six league games (D2 L4) was disconcerting enough but the fact a couple of those were harrowing in nature, losing 6-1 and 5-1 at Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, respectively, must have had a fair few alarm bells ringing.

Best Frankfurt Bet – Under 2.5 Goals @ 31/20 Betfair? Although league games involving Frankfurt did average above 3 goals per game, those goals did gradually ease up in the second half of the season, especially at home. Their final two home fixtures saw them draw 0-0 with Hertha Berlin and lose 2-0 to Mainz, with five of their last eight home games producing Under 2.5 Goals. With no more Haller or Jovic either, goals at the Commerzbank-Arena may not be as forthcoming as they once were.

Hoffenheim Preview – Losing their manager to stunt teams progression?

According to Infogol’s Expected Goals model, Hoffenheim underachieved by a considerable margin in 2018/19, finishing down in ninth when the quality of their performances implied a much higher league position was not only attainable but deserving. Any prospect of them fulfilling that potential this time around would appear dubious following the inevitable departure of head coach Julian Nagelsmann, with the exciting 32-year-old now at the helm of rivals RB Leipzig.

The manager wasn’t the only big name to exit the club during the summer. Nadiem Amiri, Nico Schulz, Kerem Demirbay and Joelington were all key components in a side that shown numerous times it could mix it with the heavyweights of the division but were also allowed to leave. New faces have arrived but we must wait to discover whether they can have a similar impact as their predecessors.

Similar to their matchday opponents, Hoffenheim ended last season in a disappointing manner. A final day defeat at Mainz, going down 4-2, marked their third loss in the final four fixtures as the Nagelsmann tenure concluded in forgettable fashion. Away from home, though, the team were surprisingly at its most menacing – the 42 goals scored on their travels was 14 more than they managed back at home. Their overall away record (W6 D7 L4) ranked as the seventh-best.

Best Hoffenheim Bet – Hoffenheim Over 0.5 Goals @ 2/9 Betway? It is very short odds but this bet would have been a winner 100% of the time last season, after Hoffenheim went the entirety of the 2018/19 Bundesliga campaign managing to score in every single away fixture. It is unlikely they can repeat the same feat again this season but it is a mightily impressive trend nonetheless.

Frankfurt V Hoffenheim Key Facts:

  • Frankfurt ended last season failing to record a win in their last six league matches (D2 L4).
  • Hoffenheim failed to record a win in any of their final four league fixtures in 2018/19 (D1 L3).
  • Both league encounters last season were won by Frankfurt, scoring in the 96th minute to clinch a 3-2 win at home.

Betting Summary

Frankfurt ended the last campaign on a real sour note to not only bow out of the Europa League at the semi-final stages, on penalties no less, but also going their final six league matches without wining (D2 L4). Furthermore, the club allowed some of their most influential game changers to complete transfers elsewhere. Strikers Sebastien Haller and Luka Jovic, the pair who combined for 32 league goals in 2018/19, are now plying their trade in the English Premier League and La Liga, respectively.

It was a similar story at Hoffenheim, in fairness. After seeing out the season by winning none of their last four league games, where they finished in a underwhelming ninth place, the club were then helpless to allow their young manager to complete his protracted switch to a rival team. Key players such as Nico Schulz and Joelington were also sold for a tidy profit, but question marks remain over whether they have been adequately replaced.

There are a lot of unknowns surrounding both sides ahead of the new season. Frankfurt came out on top in both meetings last time around but needed a winner with almost the last kick of the game to do so. With neither team bringing any semblance of positive form into this fixture, backing another super tight encounter could be the way to go.
