Having finished eighth and seventh respectively in the last couple of seasons – in addition to winning the German Cup – expectations have been growing year on year in Frankfurt. Add to that their impressive run to the semi-finals of the Europa League last season and it’s definitely been a really encouraging spell for the club. When football returned in May there was still the outside chance that Schalke could challenge for the top four and qualification for the Champions League. At that same time, it was hard to imagine that David Wagner’s men would miss out on European football altogether but that appears to be the way the season is heading.
Incredibly, Schalke have not won a game since the 17th of January. That was against Borussia Monchengladbach in the first game after the winter break. Since then it’s just been a dismal run of form. Seven defeats in 13 games – failing to score in eight of those games.

That run has all but confirmed Wagner’s future at the club with the former Huddersfield head coach set to depart. That in itself means motivation and the mind-set of the players is going to be questionable in the remaining games.
Schalke will end their season against Freiburg having hosted Wolfsburg in between these two games. All three opponents who are more than capable of inflicting more misery on them.
