Eintracht Frankfurt Preview – Die Adler in blistering New Year form?

Scheduling for this latest round of Bundesliga action has fallen favourably for Adi Hutter’s side. The Eintracht Frankfurt (10th – W8 D4 L10) head coach oversaw a 4-1 victory at the Commerzbank-Arena last Thursday, in the first-leg of their Round of 32 Europa League match-up with Austrian champions RB Salzburg, but his team are the only one of the three German sides involved that night to feature last up on Monday.

Having an additional 24 hours to not only recover from their midweek exertions but also prepare for the visit of a side who should be much fresher, could make all the difference. Playing this fixture at home also helps. Frankfurt perform their better work inside their Commerzbank-Arena, where they would claim the notable scalps of Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen this season – accounting for three of the current top-four by an aggregate of 10-1 – and lost only twice (W8 D3 L2).

In addition, ‘The Eagles’ have made a sensational start to the second half of the season by claiming 10 points from their opening five Bundesliga fixtures in 2020 (W3 D1 L1), beating the often lauded RB Leipzig twice, in league and cup, since the turn of the year. Last week’s 4-0 loss at Dortmund was their heaviest of the campaign meanwhile, and could have easily knocked them out of their stride. Thursday’s dismantling of Salzburg, however, suggests otherwise.

Union Berlin Preview – Die Eisernen seeking successive away wins?

Two-thirds of the season completed and Union Berlin (12th – W8 D2 L12) are well-positioned to extend their stay in the German top tier. Which is all rather impressive for a number of reasons. The first being that this is the club’s maiden spell in the Bundesliga, with their limited amount of experience and relative spending power at this level naturally making them prime candidates for a swift demotion back to the Bundesliga 2.

Arguably more eye-catching, however, is the fact their current comfort of mid-table was achieved in spite of a shoddy record away from home. Sat in 12th on 26 points, the club find themselves two points shy of Monday’s opponents Frankfurt – whom they are aiming to beat for the very first time, having failed in all eight competitive meetings prior (D3 L5) – and a full nine clear of the relegation play-off, but claimed only eight of those points on the road (W2 D2 L7).

Up until earlier this month, Urs Fischer’s side could just one win in eleven away matches. Beating Werder Bremen 2-0 at their Weserstadion on 8th February was a minor surprise therefore. Though it was, admittedly, against the team with the worst home record in the division. An agonising 3-2 defeat at home to Bayer Leverkusen followed soon after, as Union conceded twice inside the final ten minutes and slumped to a fifth loss in the past seven league matches (W2 L5).

Eintracht Frankfurt Vs Union Berlin Betting Advice

Considering what we know – that Frankfurt are incredibly strong at home and have beaten some of the league’s best sides on their own patch, whereas Union Berlin struggle when asked to travel losing seven of their 12 away fixtures thus far – it is pleasantly surprising to see the hosts available at such generous odds. Sure they were involved in Europe a few days ago, but that was light work in the end for Adi Hutter’s men.

Eintracht Frankfurt Vs Union Berlin – Key Facts

  • Frankfurt are aiming to win their fifth match in a row on home soil in all competitions, with their record in said matches in the Bundesliga this season W8 D3 L2.
  • Union Berlin would lose for the fifth league game in seven last time out, but did win 2-0 at Bremen on latest away outing – only their second away win in the league in 2019-20 (W2 D2 L7).
  • After eight previous encounters in all competitions, Union Berlin are still searching for their first win over Frankfurt, who would prevail in each of the most recent four.

Union Berlin’s form in 2020 is patchy as well. There were wins over Augsburg and Bremen, but also losses away at RB Leipzig, Dortmund and at home to Leverkusen last time out. The visitors will also be missing their suspended captain, Christopher Trimmel. Meanwhile, Frankfurt have begun the year in outstanding form by winning five of eight contests in all competitions (W5 D1 L2), including all four staged at their Commerzbank-Arena.
