Elgin are treading water in League Two at the moment but they turn their attention to the Challenge Cup and taking on a Highland rival and current leaders of the Championship, Inverness.

Elgin City Preview – Could Elgin pull up a big upset to continue their journey in the Challenge Cup?

Gavin Price is closing in on four years in charge of Elgin and knows the challenges of the job. In his time at the club they have finished 6th, 8th, 3rd and 5th. It’s fluctuating but that’s what you expect from a club of their size in the lower leagues where there is little to choose between the teams.

To date it’s been an underwhelming start to this league campaign as Elgin have taken just nine points from a possible 27. It’s a start which sees them in seventh place and already five points adrift of the playoff spots. It’s also just one win in their last six league games so hardly the form they would want coming into this match.

Price will be hoping that his team can use the change of competition to their favour, though. Elgin have seen off Hibernian’s Colts team in the first round before being awarded a 3-0 win against Dunfermilne who were unable to fulfil the fixture. The Pars’ misfortune is Elgin’s gain.

If Elgin are to cause an upset then you would expect Kane Hester to have a big performance. He’s on five goals for the season including both in the 2-1 win over Hibernian. His other three came courtesy of a hat-trick in a league win over Albion Rovers.

Inverness Preview – Will Caley Thistle show why they are currently top of the Championship and progress to next round?

There has been a lot of change at Inverness over the last year or so. John Robertson moved aside as head coach due to health reasons and Neil McCann’s interim spell in charge came to an end at the end of last season. Billy Dodds was the somewhat surprising choice to take charge. Dodds was not the most popular due to his previous ties with rivals Ross County.

He’s definitely winning over the club’s supporters, though, with Caley Thistle sitting top of the Championship. They’re three points clear with six wins and just one defeat in their first eight matches.

Although there is a long way to go in the league there’s no doubt Caley are on the right track. They have the joint best defensive record in the division but did suffer that first defeat in surprising fashion away to a struggling Hamilton team last weekend.

Only Falkirk have won this competition more than Caley although their total of three victories is inflated with the sharing of the cup in the curtailed season of 2019/20. They were also successful in 2004 and 2018. Buckie Thistle proved to be no match in the last round with Caley winning 4-0.

Elgin City vs Inverness Betting Advice

There’s around 40 miles between these two clubs so it’s as close to a derby game as you can get in this part of the world. Despite that it’s not a fixture which is played all that often – competitively at least. The last meeting was back in 2018 when Caley edged past their opponents 2-1 in a Scottish Cup tie.

Elgin will hope to be as competitive this time around as it looks an uphill task on paper.

Key Facts – Elgin City vs Inverness Betting Tip

  • Elgin City qualified for this stage following being awarded a 3-0 win in the last round against Dunfermilne
  • Billy Dodds has Inverness sitting top of the Championship in his first season at the club
  • The teams last met in the 2017/18 Scottish Cup when Inverness prevailed 2-1

Inverness may have won just twice on their travels this season but both those wins have came without conceding. With Elgin losing 2-0 in their most recent two home matches I’m happy to take both teams not to score.
