This year’s Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin is back in action at the US Open on Tuesday as she lines up in the fourth round against Elise Mertens.

This should be a cracker of a match as well with Belgium’s Mertens having produced some great recent form.

While she is the underdog for this fourth round contest, Mertens is not to be taken lightly.

Elise Mertens Preview – Mertens continuing to perform well

At the Western & Southern Open in the week before the US Open 2020, Elise Mertens produced a very good campaign.

She was only stopped in the semi-finals by Naomi Osaka, but Mertens didn’t go down without a fight in that one at all.

Mertens continued her good form by winning all three matches back at Flushing Meadows in straight sets.

Granted this is the toughest match of her campaign in New York so far, but a Mertens 2-0 option in set betting is interesting at 12/5* (odds taken 22:00 GMT Sunday, 6th September).

It is perhaps worth remembering that Mertens was a quarter-finalist last year at the US Open and the year before made it to the fourth round.

So the 24 year old does have the tools to rattle World Number 4 Sofia Kenin in this fourth round match, even though she is the 11/10 underdog* (odds taken 22:00 GMT Sunday, 6th September).

Elise Mertens and Sofia Kenin have met twice before in singles and it is American Kenin who has come out on top in both of those.

Both of those meetings were last year with Kenin winning on grass in Mallorca, and on the hard court of Wuhan.

Going back to the current form of Elise Mertens, she ran to the final of the Prague Open in mid-August where she lost to Simona Halep.

She is well worth considering for this contest as the underdog.

Sofia Kenin Preview – Can Kenin progress at the US Open?

Sofia Kenin took the tennis world by storm by winning the Australian Open 2020, having started as a massive outsider.

The American did show up at the Western & Southern Open and lost her first match there against Alize Cornet.

That left her on a three-match losing streak since winning the Australian Open. But that was snapped with her progress at the US Open.

Kenin took out Yannina Wickmayer in the first round of the US Open 2020 and then Leylah Fernandez in the second round.

In the last round, she had a really big match on her hands against the in-form Ons Jabeur and Kenin came up trumps in straight sets.

Sofia Kenin is the 8/11 favourite to win this match in the fourth round* (odds taken 22:00 GMT Sunday, 6th September).

But she is going to have frank that a bit given the inconsistencies that she has shown since landing that Grand Slam in Melbourne.

Sofia Kenin is a ball of constant energy and she looked fired up against Jabeur, to her credit.

The Australian Open 2020 is one of two titles that Kenin has won this year, the other was in Lyon in early March in a lower-tiered tournament on the WTA.

We don’t think that she is quite playing at the level that she was when she was storming the Australian Open field earlier this year.

Because of that, we may have a seriously long look at the 3 Sets in Total for an 11/8 quote on the match* (odds taken 22:00 GMT Sunday, 6th September).

It was only a narrow win that Kenin got over Mertens in Wuhan, courtesy of a third-set tiebreak.

This is the first time that Kenin has been to the fourth round of the US Open and will likely need to be a bit sharper from the start.

She was hanging on a bit in the early stages of her contest with Jabeur and had to soak up a lot of pressure.

Elise Mertens vs Sofia Kenin Betting Advice

We fancy the chances of Elise Mertens in this contest whose recent form has been excellent, far above that of Kenin’s.

Kenin had to dig deep to get the better of Ons Jabeur and she ground it out with some superb baseline play in the second set.

She will face plenty of pressure in this one as Mertens has a big serve in her and looks in a great mood at the moment.

Key Facts – Elise Mertens vs Sofia Kenin Betting Tip

  • Elise Mertens has won 11 of her last 13 matches
  • Kenin was the 2020 Australian Open champion
  • Sofia Kenin has won the two previous singles matches with Mertens

So we can’t overlook the math outright odds of 11/10 on the win for Mertens, it’s definitely worth a look* (odds taken 22:00 GMT Sunday, 6th September).

The last match between these two was fantastic, and there was very little between them on the day.

We are going to swing the way of the Belgian’s better form and a Mertens 2-1 Set Betting option at 15/4 has some appeal as a longer-priced option* (odds taken 22:00 GMT Sunday, 6th September).
