England Preview – Can England defeat old foe?
England returned to winning ways in their final match in Group D with a narrow 1-0 victory over Czech Republic to finish three points clear of runners-up, Croatia, at the top of the group and progress through to this round of last 16 tie against Germany.
That’s now eight wins from their last nine matches in all competitions for England and although they’ll be quietly confident about their chances, they’ve not been entirely convincing during the group stage and would probably have liked to have avoided facing Germany at such an early stage in the knockout rounds.
England have kept eight clean sheets in these last nine games but they’ve won just one of the previous five meetings against Germany with their last encounter finishing in a 0-0 stalemate back in 2017.
Germany Preview – Can Germany win at Wembley?
A 2-2 draw with Hungary in their final match in Group F helped Germany secure their place in this round of last 16 in Euro 2020 in what was arguably the toughest group of the tournament with the likes of France and Portugal also in the four-nation group.
With just three defeats out of their last 23 matches in all competitions, Germany still remain a serious threat on the European stage, especially to England, who have found scoring goals a difficult exercise so far in this Euro 2020.
Germany have also drawn six of their last 16 matches overall and they may well be happy to bide their time and frustrate England for as long as possible as Wembley will expect the hosts to get across the line here.
