A game of huge importance goes down at Twickenham on Sunday in the 2020 Six Nations. England will be looking to close the gap on the Irish as they enter their first home fixture of this year’s campaign. Ireland have gone two wins from two, can they stop the English?

England can gain control at Twickenham

A huge game for England who have already had a taste of defeat to deal with in this championship. England lost out in France in their opener, churning out a terribly disjointed, error-strewn performance.

On the second weekend of action, they found a winning performance at Murrayfield against Scotland, taking a 13-6 win.

It was such terrible weather conditions though, that there was nothing to take away from that game. Not in terms of performance and where England are at.

Eddie Jones’s men just needed the win though after their 24-17 reverse in Paris. England have been boosted with the news that Manu Tuilagi is fit to go, but they will miss Mako Vunipola up front.

Following this game against Ireland, England will then host Wales in the championship. So this is where the Red Rose can get themselves back into title contention.

The Grand Slam chance has gone, but the Triple Crown is still alive along with the Six Nations title. In last season’s Six Nations, England claimed a superb 32-20 victory in Dublin.

Can Ireland stop England at Twickenham?

While it has been two wins from two from Ireland so far in the 2020 Six nations, the two performances have been vastly different.

They were second best in their opening contest against Scotland but managed to produce a scrappy 19-12 win, largely thanks to the visitors being awfully wasteful.

But the Irish were far better back at home in round two as they collected a 24-14 win over reigning Six Nations champions Wales.

Ireland were superb up front, controlling territory and ball through a lot of dogged forward work. They are going to need more of that to try and keep England reined in at Twickenham.

Ireland did win on their last trip to England in the Six Nations, collecting a 24-15 there in 2018. It has been a W3 L2 record that the Irish have taken in their last five clashes against England in the championship.

Ireland had lost three in a row prior to that at Twickenham in the Six Nations before that 2018 success. Three of the last four meetings between England and Ireland at Twickenham have been settled by at least a margin of nine points.

England vs Ireland Betting Advice

Ireland were much better in the second round of action against Wales and they will be looking to exert more of that forward power against England. This should be a cracker of a match and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see it turn into a big forward clash.

Key Facts – England vs Ireland Betting Tip

  • England have won three of their last four at home against Ireland
  • England are W1 L1 in this campaign, Ireland are W2
  • Ireland won at Twickenham in their last Six Nations visit

England arguably do have the better of the back lines and the Irish have relied heavily on Johnny Sexton in this campaign. England will probably be targeting the Irish captain.

Because of home soil advantage, because of the bigger cutting edge in the backs, England can take the home win.
