England Preview – Will Southgate’s men sign off their preparations with another win?

England may have beaten Austria on Wednesday to make it five wins in a row but the most significant aspect of that game was the loss of Trent Alexander-Arnold to injury and the Liverpool defender will now miss the European Championships. Whilst it’s a blow for Gareth Southgate there is no shortage of options in that position and he is also able to call up a replacement. Southgate will just be hoping that no more of his squad get injured between now and the big kick-off.

For England that is a week on Sunday when they take on Croatia at Wembley. Czech Republic and Scotland are also in their section. All three of their group games would be at their home stadium as would the majority of their knockout games should they progress as expected.

There’s no denying the expectation on this squad and it’s arguably the most on any English team since Euro 2004. Not only do they have the most talented group of players since then but they also have that home advantage which could be so important, especially against the other top nations in the latter rounds.

That’s all to come, though, and this game is about giving Southgate food for thought as the finalises his team selection for that match against Croatia – the team who ended their hopes at the 2018 World Cup.

Romania Preview – Can Romania end a run of three three defeats by getting a surprise win?

It will be a summer spent watching the Euros rather than competing in it for Romania. Mirel Radoi and his players will be envious of their opponents but at the same time using this game to restore some positivity after a run of three straight defeats. Armenia and Georgia have gotten the better of them in their two most recent games with the former of those being in their World Cup qualification section.

Romania currently sit fourth in their group with three points after as many games. They already have a lot of work to do if they are to reach the finals next year.

There have been some notable results during Radoi’s 18 month’s in charge with wins over Norway and Austria in last year’s Nations League campaign but it’s the lack of consistency that has been their biggest issue. That’s seen again in their current group where they have defeated leaders North Macedonia but failed to pick up a point elsewhere.

This will be Romania’s last game before qualification resumes and although they are not expected to get anything from it, they will at least be hoping for a good performance having lost at home to Georgia last week.

England vs Romania Betting Advice

Southgate is expected to make a host of changes from the team who beat Austria on Wednesday and it’s likely that the Manchester City and Chelsea players who competed in last weekend’s Champions League final will get some time as they integrate themselves into the squad.

Romania look like being the perfect opponent for England in that they will be going on their holidays immediately after this game after what will have been a long season for them all.

Key Facts – England vs Romania Betting Tip

  • England will start their Euro 2020 campaign with a match against Croatia at Wembley a week on Sunday
  • Romania missed out on qualifying for the European Championships and are building towards resuming their World Cup qualifying section in September
  • Gareth Southgate’s men have won their last five matches scoring 14 goals and conceding just one

England were a bit disjointed in the win over Austria so they will be hoping for more fluency here. I’m taking them to do just that and have them winning at half time and full time with little fuss.
