England and Wales will get to renew their rivalry on Thursday night as the two meet for an international friendly.

This will be England’s first fixture at Wembley this year and they are the big odds-on favourite for what is nothing more than a warm-up for both ahead of Nations League fixtures.

So from a football betting perspective, this is going to be a tough game to call. It is the first meeting between the neighbours since the Euro 2016 tournament.

England Preview – England expected to take the home win

This is not going to be a full-on intense clash of course between England and Wales. There are more important matters coming up for both in the Nations League.

England could need a bit of sharpening up as well after some disappointing performances in their first couple of Nations League games.

Those recent fixtures saw England scrape out a late 1-0 win in Iceland, before being held to a draw against Denmark.

Those were not inspiring performances from the Three Lions and it will be interesting to see what boss Gareth Southgate does in this one.

Certainly the in-form Jack Grealish and Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin could get a chance to play their way into the Nations League starting XI.

England are the 1/3 odds-on favourites in the match outright so there is no value there* (odds taken 23:23 GMT, Wednesday 7th October).

We just expect this, being a friendly fixture and with a trend of low-scoring games between these, to see a night where goals are at a premium.

Our betting prediction:
England 1 goal winning margin
11/4

The Three Lions are such strong favourites that we would have to support them collecting a meaningless win.

The temptation would be to swing for an England to win by a 1 goal margin option at 11/4* (odds taken 23:23 GMT, Wednesday 7th October).

They did look really poor in those competitive Nations League matches, so aren’t worth jumping all over to suddenly come good in front of goal.

England are on a five match winning streak against Wales, three of those coming by a one-goal margin.

Wales Preview – Wales understrength for Wembley visit

The Welsh are not going to be at full strength for this fixture with players like Aaron Ramsey, Gareth Bale and Daniel James not taking part.

Wales do have a good bit of momentum going for themselves as they have won their last four games on the spin.

They returned to action this autumn with back to back 1-0 successes over Finland and Bulgaria.

That adds on to their current streak of eight undefeated games.

Each of their last four wins have been with a clean sheet as well, so that’s another factor that is likely to keep the score down.

But Wales haven’t not looked particularly prolific scoring threat under Ryan Giggs.

Wales haven’t won against England at Wembley since 1977.

However they may well turn up in a stubborn mood, sending some interest towards the draw in the match outright which is at 17/4* (odds taken 23:23 GMT, Wednesday 7th October).

Wales will go on to face Ireland and Bulgaria following this friendly in the Nations League and a bigger focus has to be there.

So we can see this petering out pretty quickly in the second half of the contest and an under 2.5 goals option has to be seriously looked at for a 11/10 quote* (odds taken 23:23 GMT, Wednesday 7th October)

To back up that statistics only three of the last 15 games for Wales have made it over the 2.5 goal line.

They are also facing an England side who haven’t conceded in five.

England vs Wales Betting Advice

There are not many fireworks expected in this contest, not with it coming so close to competitive international action in the Nations League.

We would back England to get a narrow victory in the match, but Wales are a confident side, so we would struggle to see England win by anything more than a 2-goal margin.

But it is the England 1-Goal margin win that appeals for football betting at 11/4* (odds taken 23:23 GMT, Wednesday 7th October).

Key Facts – England vs Wales Betting Tip

  • England are on a five-match winning streak against Wales
  • England are unbeaten in their last eight friendly fixtures, winning five
  • Wales are on a four match winning streak
  • England have only failed to win 2 of their last 14 home games against home nation teams
  • Wales have won 1 of 17 previous matches against England at Wembley (D5 L11)

Wales are missing their key influential creative players and so they may struggle to break down England.

But in turn that means that they are probably going to be stubborn to break down on the night.

So we would fully turn to the 11/10 odds on the game ending under 2.5 goals* (odds taken 23:23 GMT, Wednesday 7th October).
