Estonia – In-form hosts seeking another upset?

The ‘Blueshirts’ are off the mark in Group E. Friday’s 2-0 scoreline against Belarus here in Tallinn represented their first victory of the campaign, having previously picked up a solitary point from their first four encounters. That did come in the reverse fixture though, a hard-fought goalless draw in the Welsh capital last month. They have every reason to believe they can go one better when the sides reconvene.

That win over Belarus marked a fourth win in seven for Estonia who, remarkably, were without a win in the nineteen fixtures prior to this purple patch. Their form at home this year does make them vulnerable, however, losing three of five (W2). However, the fact they did score twice in all but one – including a spirited effort in a 5-2 defeat to Belgium – suggests they are more than capable of taking the game to Wales.

Key Stat: Estonia have only failed to score in one of their past eight matches as the home side, netting exactly two goals in four of five such matches held in 2021.

Wales – Three points the only acceptable outcome?

Goalkeeper Danny Ward’s comical error during Friday’s 2-2 draw against the Czech Republic, failing to control a relatively simple back pass as the ball spun over his foot and into his own net, cost his team-mates the win in a pivotal fixture. But the point in Prague does at least keep qualification hopes in Welsh hands, with seven points from their final three qualifiers enough to see them finish second in Group E.

One of those games is at home to the world’s highest ranked team, albeit a Belgium side who in all likelihood will have won the group by then. In other words, there is minimal room for any more costly errors like that witnessed three days ago, with victory in Estonia now a minimum requirement. That is by no means guaranteed, however, having won only one of the last six internationals (D3 L2).

Key Stat: Two of Wales’ last three matches have seen both teams find the net, when only one of their previous nine had done so.

Estonia Vs Wales Betting Advice

Last month, Wales huffed and puff but couldn’t find a way through a resolute, if slightly fortunate, Estonian rearguard. The visitors had one or two moments or their own, though, and back on home soil will certainly fancy their chances of springing another upset as a significant underdog. The hosts have only collected four points through five qualifiers so far but are in excellent form otherwise, winning four of the last seven.

Estonia Vs Wales – Key Facts:

  • The visiting side begin as favourites in Tallinn, however, it is worth noting how the Welsh haven’t led at half-time in any of their five qualifying encounters thus far.
  • Hosts Estonia are enjoying some resurgent form. They’ve recorded four wins across their past seven fixtures (D1 L2), scoring 2+ in four of five home matches held this year.
  • Conversely, Wales are toiling of late. Friday’s draw in the Czech Republic was their third in four games, having won once in their last six attempts (W1 D3 L2).

Wales will be only too aware that anything less than victory leaves them susceptible to missing out on second place. So the onus is on them to go and win this fixture, which could make them vulnerable from a defensive perspective. Robert Page’s team has scored and concede at least two goals in two of their past three qualifiers, and with Estonia in rich scoring form here in Tallinn, we could be in for an entertaining renewal.
