Liverpool can gain derby spoils

Premier League Tips

Saturday 7th April 2018 Kick off 1230hrs Everton v Liverpool Football – England – Premier League The Merseyside derby is often one of the biggest standout fixtures for both sets of fans and the anticipation begins well in advance of the actual game. It’s slightly different heading into Saturday’s game at Goodison Park in a game that has slipped under the radar somewhat. The reasons for that vary for both teams, though, as Everton are struggling to many any sort of impact this season and are probably looking for it to ending, whereas for Liverpool it comes sandwiched in between their quarter final tie against Manchester City. Come kick-off, however, it’s likely to be it’s usual explosive encounter.

For all the expectation and promise that surrounded Everton’s campaign last summer, it’s a season that even the most diehard of Toffees is willing to end. Last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Manchester City is certainly no disgrace, but it’s further illustration of just how far this Everton have to go and a reminder of where they have slipped to. Although they were never expected to compete with the likes of City or Manchester United over the course of this season, Everton have always been competitive against the best the Premier League have to offer but they’ve been nowhere near it for large parts of this season. Although Sam Allardyce has only been in post a matter of months, it’s looking like the club’s owners are looking to replace him this summer which is going to have a detrimental effect on how the team performs on the park. With half a dozen games of their season left it will be an enduring end to what has been a very underwhelming campaign. Ordinarily a game against their arch rivals from across the city would be the perfect opportunity to restore some good feeling but the players have to show they are capable of stepping up in these big games.

If Everton are sulking, licking their wounds coming into this game, Liverpool are on the crest of a wave having dismantled Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final on Wednesday. In a first half blitz the Reds have taken a huge step towards the last four and within touching distance of reaching yet another final of European’s biggest club competition. They will have to wait until Tuesday before hoping they can finish that job but attention switches back to the Premier League on Saturday – much to the frustration of Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool’s manager was not slow in expressing that frustration in the immediate aftermath of their win over City. Klopp is of the opinion that playing this sort if game in between their European commitments is a hinderance to English clubs success on the continent but that’s the situation teams often find themselves in when they go deep into competitions. It’s little more than posturing from Klopp and he will look to play a team capable of getting a result on Saturday to continue their good league form, at the same time as ensuring his squad are fighting fit ahead of the return game with City in a few days time.

Everton v Liverpool Betting Tip

This is the third Merseyside derby of the season as the clubs met each other in the FA Cup earlier this year. Liverpool scored late on to win that tie 2-1 but had to settle for a point in the league game played at Anfield in December. Everton were very defensive in both those games and as such, deprived Liverpool’s attack of the spaces that they crave and were shown to such good effect on Wednesday in the Champions League. Although Everton will be at home this time around, it’s doubtful that Allardyce will change too much as it has been effective to a degree – and it’s not as if Everton possess a huge amount of attacking flair (only Burnley have scored less than them in the top half). Liverpool are likely to be without the league’s top scorer in Mohammed Salah following the Egyptian winger limping off against City and he may not be the only one to miss out as Klopp assesses the fitness of his whole squad on the back of their exertions in Europe.

Everton continue to struggle to man any sort of impact against the better teams in the league and Liverpool are certainly in that category. The 26 points between the two clubs is a fair reflection on the gap that exists and it’s hard to see how the home side cut that deficit come full time on Saturday. Liverpool are playing with huge confidence at the minute and even though they may not have all their weapons for this one, they can still do enough to record a 10th away win in the league.
