It’s derby day in the Premier League this Saturday and the lunchtime kickoff in the top flight features the merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park with only pride left to play for for the hosts.

It’s been a disappointing season for The Toffees as they currently occupy ninth place in the Premier League, and although there was plenty of pre-season optimism with the return of former favourite, Wayne Rooney along with heavy spending in the transfer market to secure the services of Sigurdsson, Walcott and latterly, Tosun, but the departure of former striker, Lukaku, left a hole that Everton just haven’t been able to fill.

The lack of firepower has cost Everton dearly, and having lost four of their last seven, the fans are starting to call for manager, Sam Allardyce’s head, and rumours are rife that he’ll be replaced at the end of the season. That said, prior to a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City last time out, Everton had registered three wins on the trot over Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Brighton.

If a team (other than Manchester City of course), had made a statement in this season’s top flight, then it was most definitely Liverpool during the week when they recorded an emphatic 3-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals at Anfield which puts them firmly in the driving seat for a semi-final place.

Jurgen Klopp’s boys now turn their attentions back to the Premier League and the small matter of a local derby against merseyside rivals, Everton, at Goodison Park as The Reds look to beat Manchester United into second place.

This would be sweet revenge for Liverpool whose only defeat in their last eight matches was a 2-1 defeat to United at Old Trafford, but five wins from their last six matches, along with the midweek thrashing of Manchester City should see them upbeat here.
