Everton Preview

When Marco Silva was appointed back in the summer and awarded a vast transfer budget to shape this Everton squad into his own, the club’s supporters would probably have been hoping for much better than a mid-table position and out of both cup competitions before the beginning of February. Saturday’s defeat to Wolves was demoralising for many reasons, not least because it was their fourth defeat in five games. But it was also an indication of just how far this team have got to go despite their expensively assembled squad. This defeat didn’t come against a top four team or even an established Premier League club – it was a team who have just been promoted with a group of players most of whom were playing in the Championship last season. But they have an identity and a way of playing that has put Silva’s approach even more under the spotlight. With the visit of title-chasing City ahead on Wednesday it could either be a perfect opportunity to restore some positivity or the potential for even more misery to be heaped on Everton.

Key-Facts – Everton v Manchester City

  • City can go above Liverpool and return to the top of the table with a win on Wednesday
  • Everton’s defeat to Wolves on Saturday was their fourth in their last five games
  • 11 of City’s last 15 league games have seen both teams scoring and going over 2.5 goals

Manchester City Preview

Just over a week ago, even the most optimistic of Manchester City fans would have been expected to go seven points behind Liverpool following defeat to Newcastle. We know by now, however, not to take anything for granted or make assumptions in football. Liverpool have since drawn both their games and it now allows City to go back above them with a win on Wednesday night. The opportunity has presented itself because Pep Guardiola’s men will be playing in the final of the EFL Cup at the end of this month and this was seen as a suitable date for it to be rearranged to. That’s a blow for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp even if the Reds will have a game in hand, the psychological effect of being displaced at the top should not be underestimated and Guardiola will know exactly that as his team make the short trip to Merseyside.

Everton v Manchester City Betting Preview

It’s a rather unenviable position for Everton as they desperately need points to salvage what has been a disappointing season thus far but any points they take off City would hand the advantage to their neighbours, Liverpool – which would be extremely hard to take for most of their supporters. City have to get back to winning ways on their travels following that defeat to Newcastle and we know they can be susceptible, even when they hold a lead.

City’s three defeats this season have come against teams who know how to organise themselves and nullify the City attack – at least to some degree – and put pressure on a defence which still seems vulnerable. That’s the blueprint for Everton and Marco Silva but it would be something of a stretch to think that the hosts can muster the sort of defensive effort required to get a result. No team in the top nine have conceded more than the Toffees and the visitors will be relishing the opportunity of coming up against them. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals has won in 11 of City’s last 15 league games and looks very appealing to come in once again on Wednesday.
