Everton Preview – Can Toffees open account in merseyside derby?
Everton head into this upcoming merseyside derby against Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime still in search of picking up their first win of the season as The Toffees occupy familiar territory down near the lower reaches of the Premier League.
Everton were handed back to back defeats in their opening two games of this new season as the hosts lost to Chelsea and Aston Villa in 1-0 and 2-1 defeats but although Everton have since steadied the ship with three draws on the trot and picking up valuable points in stalemates with Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Leeds United, league wins continue to elude Frank Lampard’s men.

Liverpool’s recent 2-1 defeat away from home at Manchester United was not only a blow to The Reds against one of their old foes but it has also seemingly sparked a backlash from Jurgen Klopp’s men as his side have since recorded back to back wins in the English top flight, thrashing Bournemouth 9-0 and then following up that comprehensive victory with a 2-1 win against an improving Newcastle United outfit.
The bigger picture paints a very bright outlook for Liverpool though (and also a very ominous one for Everton) as The Reds have lost just once in their last 24 matches overall, which includes picking up a total of 18 wins in the process.
Liverpool’s dominance also isn’t exclusive to results at Anfield either as the visitors have suffered just the one defeat in their last 11 outings on the road and includes seven wins as well, so they look the more likely for the three points here, especially as they still need to make up ground on the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.
