Preview: A win in the Merseyside derby has evaded Everton for more than a decade, so what hope is there on Sunday as champions-elect Liverpool roll up to Goodison Park?

Everton Preview – Victory on Sunday can partly redeem for a poor season?

In an ideal world, Everton (12th – W10 D7 L12) would win their first Merseyside derby since 2010 on Sunday, while in the process reveling in successfully sabotaging Liverpool’s quest for a first Premier League title. Sadly, that last part is no longer realistic. Not that it will stop the home side from wanting to delay their rival’s procession to the crown – particularly as it would serve as a welcome boost to their own cause.

Qualifying for next season’s Europa League through the league is still plausible, if not exactly straightforward, with seventh placed Wolves six points better off. The Toffees must somehow harness their earlier form under Carlo Ancelotti, whose first eight league games at the helm returned five wins before embarking on a run of one point in nine following tough games with Arsenal (3-2), Chelsea (4-0) and Manchester United (1-1)

Injuries to several first-team members, namely Yerry Mina, Fabian Delph and Theo Walcott, has, however, complicated matters for the Italian coach whose impact on this side has been apparent from the outset. This Everton side displaying infinitely more hunger, passion and, funnily enough, ability on the pitch than it arguably ever did under former manager Marco Silva.

Liverpool Preview – Imperious Reds out to seal title early?

After some anxiety-inducing months wondering whether this season, one dominated right up until its suspension in March, would ever resume, finally Liverpool (1st – W27 D1 L1) are able to continue their march towards a first Premier League title since 1989-90. The opportunity to set those wheels back in motion at the home of their local neighbours, should only add to this team’s desire to ensure the league is wrapped up in timely fashion.

Unfortunately, the title cannot officially be won on Sunday. Man City’s midweek win over Arsenal put pay to that. Three points at Goodison would nevertheless be another significant stride towards the prize they crave more than any other. For context, there has never been a larger deficit between teams in first and second than the one Liverpool has established, with Klopp’s men 25-points in the clear after dropping five points the whole season.

There is also the possibility of surpassing Man City’s record-breaking 100-point haul of 2017/18. A record Jurgen Klopp has challenged his team to rewrite. Meanwhile, Divock Origi’s brace stole the show in the reverse fixture as The Reds routed their rivals 5-2. Now the Belgian is the cusp on history: should he manage another two goals on Sunday, he would become the first Liverpool player for almost a century to achieve such a feat in the same season.

Everton Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

History tells us Everton simple don’t do Merseyside derbies. Sure, they’ve made it difficult on occasions – especially so at Goodison, where there has been six draws across the previous seven seasons. The wins, however, have been strictly reserved for Liverpool, who were too strong at Anfield earlier in the season and should stand to benefit more from this fixture being played without no fans in attendance.

Everton Vs Liverpool – Key Facts

  • The Toffees were without a win in their last three Premier League games (D1 L2) before the lockdown, though remain unbeaten in their last seven at home (W4 D3).
  • The Reds had gone their first twelve away league games of this season without losing before a shock 3-0 defeat at Watford in their most recent away outing.
  • No Merseyside victory for Everton in their previous 18 attempts in the Premier League (D10 L8), though have lost only once as the home side across the last seven seasons (D6 L1).

In terms of value and trends, goals are seldom scored between these two at Goodison Park – the last five producing a combined three goals. Liverpool’s defence remains the strongest in the league in terms of goals conceded (21 in 29 games), therefore an away win without conceding boasts obvious appeal at 2/1 (BetVictor)
