Preview: At Goodison Park on Saturday, Everton supporters find themselves in the strange position of desperately needing their team to win at home to Premier League leaders Man City to avoid being dragged closer to the relegation picture, but knowing any victory would boost rivals Liverpool’s title prospects.

Everton – Lampard has to lean heavily on Goodison comforts?

Burnley’s win in midweek, beating a Tottenham side who last weekend went and won a thriller at the Eithad against Man City, has made things that much more interesting towards the foot of the Premier League – and much more precarious for Everton. Frank Lampard has already seen his new team lose two of his first three league games in charge, the consequences of which are borne out in the league table.

Just two points stand between the Toffees and slipping into the Premier League relegation zone. This after losing in meek fashion at Southampton last Saturday, failing to muster a single attempt on target in a tame 2-0 defeat. Everton now have the worst away record in the English top-flight, but boast five wins from eleven home league outings this term (D1 L5). Thrashing Leeds 3-0 last time out at Goodison Park.

Key Stat: Coming into this weekend Everton have one win from their past eight league games (D1 L6), with that solitary success against a Leeds United side currently on a run of four defeats in five. The Toffees do tend to score as hosts, though, netting in 8 of 11 Premier League home games in 2021-22.

Manchester City – Pep doesn’t deal in successive defeats?

A sixth Premier League title seemed inevitable at one stage. However, a once commanding advantage has been whittled down to a mere three point lead – although that could rise again with a fourth consecutive away league victory over Everton. City have undoubtedly enjoyed this fixture in recent times, with the winning margin on all four visits exactly two goals since sustaining a chastening 4-0 loss in January 2017.

Pep Guardiola is unlikely to panic. His team weren’t at their best last time but it took a Harry Kane masterclass to undo them. It was their first defeat in the league since October (W13 D1) and only their third of this season. Meanwhile, they’ve not been beaten on the road since the opening weekend. That was also to Tottenham, winning 10 of 12 subsequent away games while conceding a league-low eight away goals.

Key Stat: Not since December 2018 has Man City lost successive matches in the Premier League. Since then they have lost 18 times in the competition, winning the very next fixture on all but one occasion.

Everton Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

Both managers will have done some soul searching during the week. Allthough perhaps less so for Pep Guardiola whose side remain imperious as ever, despite being stunned by Tottenham last time out. That marked a first league defeat in nearly four months, with 13 wins from 14 preceding last week’s 3-2 loss at home. Eight of those saw them prevail by at least a two goal margin, which is ominous ahead of Saturday.

Everton Vs Manchester City – Key Facts:

  • Both managers will be demanding a response from their players after losing efforts recently. Everton beaten 2-0 at Southampton and Man City 3-2 at home by Tottenham.
  • Pep Guardiola will be the more confident, however. The Spaniard has overseen eight consecutive league victories against Everton, which includes the last four meetings at Goodison Park.
  • Everton are a more potent team at home, though, failing to find the net in just three of 11 Premier League home games this term. Man City have scored in twelve consecutive away league games, meanwhile, since a 1-0 loss at Tottenham on the opening weekend.

The reason for this is because Everton have been beaten by precisely a two-goal margin by Man City at Goodison Park in each of the last four seasons. The Toffees can ill-afford another, though, dragged into the thick of a relegation battle following last week’s limp defeat at Southampton. Seldom do they misfire at home, though, scoring in 8 of 11 home league games thus far. Both Teams to Score appeals at evens.
