Everton – Benitez already winning over doubters?

His appointment in the summer, replacing the outgoing Carlo Ancelotti, wasn’t universally popular among the Everton fan base. However Rafael Benitez has moved quickly to win over some of his detractors. The Spaniard winning four of his seven Premier League games (D2 L1) since taking charge, and was a marginal VAR call away from making that five last time out at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

Averaging two points per game in 2021/22, the Toffees sit prominently in fifth position – level on 14 points with the Manchester clubs and two shy of the summit itself. Moreover, with the next two fixtures at Goodison Park where they have already beaten Burnley, Norwich and Southampton to make it a perfect start at home this season, there is reason to believe they are here to stay. At least in the short term.

Especially as next up is West Ham. Not since 1978/79 have they opened a top-flight campaign with four consecutive home wins. But the visit of The Hammers sees Everton taking on an opponent against whom they have recorded more Premier League wins (27) and goals (87) than any other. Winning four of the last six competitive meetings – though not last season’s league game on Merseyside (0-1).

West Ham – Another 2-1 scoreline on the cards?

The last time West Ham enjoyed a longer unbeaten run away from home in the English top-flight than they do now was at the turn of the millennium, bringing up their seventh successive away league game without losing in January 2000. David Moyes’ men are one shy of that feat, having won four and drawn two of the last six such fixtures. Among them was a 1-0 win in May of last season at Goodison Park.

In fact, the Hammers are seeking to win for the third time in four visits to this venue – registering as many wins (2) in their last three away league games versus Everton than the previous 21 visits combined. Last managing successive victories in this fixture back in 1930. Tomas Soucek, who has surprisingly only found the net once all season, scorer of the decisive goal which settled last season’s corresponding fixture.

Form wise, it doesn’t look as promising. Each of their last three league contests finished 2-1, sandwiching a win at Leeds with losing efforts at home to Brentford and Man Utd. That Leeds outing remains their sole success since opening their Premier League account for the season in thrilling fashioning, following up a 4-2 win away to Newcastle with another four-goal salvo at home to Leicester.

Everton Vs West Ham Betting Advice

There wasn’t much separating these two teams last season, the visiting side on the day both prevailing 1-0 to continue a theme which has seen all five recent league meetings fail to produce more than two goals. Only one of those saw both teams get amongst the goals, meanwhile, which is at odds with their respective records this term. Both teams scored 57% of the time in Everton games, while it is up at 86% for West Ham.

Everton Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • Only Chelsea have picked up more points so far this season than the 14 of fifth-placed Everton (W4 D2 L1), who are three points better off than West Ham (W3 D2 L1) in ninth.
  • Everton have registered their highest amount of Premier League wins (27) and goals scored (87) against West Ham, winning four of the pair’s last six meetings in all comps.
  • West Ham do boast wins on two of their past three visits to Goodison Park, however. The Hammers’ seven top-flight games this season have seen both teams score on six occasions.

Both teams have fired one blank all season – Everton’s coming in their 3-0 loss away at Aston Villa while West Ham’s was in the goalless draw at St Mary’s with Southampton – and are among the highest scorers in the division through seven matches. So, despite recent history suggesting goals could be in short supply, the evidence available this season points to an entertaining match up on Merseyside.
