Everton – Ancelotti at a loss to explain home toils?

Any hope of catching the teams above them, Tottenham and West Ham, and qualifying for Europe next season now rest on Everton (W16 D8 L12) winning their remaining two fixtures while also needing other results to fall their way. Considering their form at Goodison Park has been wretched for much of the season, but particularly since the turn of the year, it is looking like being mission improbable.

Sunday’s 1-0 loss here to bottom club Sheffield United was arguably the lowest of the lowest, in what has been a season full of those. Their ninth home defeat of the campaign – only the sides in 18th and 20th have done so more often – having failed to breach a defence which had conceded in all 18 prior away league games in 2020-21. Truly dire stuff from Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

In 2021, only Fulham (4) have picked up fewer points at home in the Premier League than the seven of Everton, who are winless on Merseyside in five (D2 L3) since a 1-0 win against Southampton in March. Meanwhile Newcastle are the only team to have recorded fewer clean sheets at their own ground than the Toffees (2), which implies that any victory in midweek will likely be achieved the hard way.

Wolves – Regression stems from lack of firepower?

Indebted to some spirited last-ditch defending from club captain Conor Coady for keeping the scoreline respectable at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, Wolves (W12 D9 L15) are now unable to finish in the top-half following their 2-0 loss away to Tottenham. In their defence, it has been a challenging campaign – one which slowly unravelled when star man Raul Jimenez suffered a fractured skull in November.

Still, it hasn’t been all doom and gloom. In fact, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were in decent form prior to Sunday’s loss to a Spurs team for whom a place in next season’s Europa League was very much on their minds. Wolves had accumulated 10 points from their previous five matches, while that was just the second match in their last nine away (W2 D4 L3) in which they conceded more than once.

Goals continue to elude them, however. On the road they have now failed to score more than once in six consecutive matches, since coming from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s in February. More recently, they managed only one away to relegated duo Fulham (0-1) and West Brom (1-1) – though they will be heartened by the lack of clean sheets Everton have kept on Merseyside this season.

Everton Vs Wolves Betting Advice

Only one of these teams has anything tangible to play for in the little that remains of this season, and that is Everton. Not that it was readily apparent in their latest fixture, a 1-0 loss here to bottom side Sheffield United. That a fifth home game on the bounce without a win for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, who simply must beat Wolves if they are to have any chance of keeping pace with the sides above them.

Everton vs Wolves – Key Facts:

  • The previous five Premier League meetings produced three or more goals. However, neither are exactly firing from all cylinders lately.
  • Everton have netted one goal across their last three games combined (W1 D1 L1), doing so on more than one occasion just once in their last 12 Premier League matches.
  • Wolves scored a total of five goals across their last six league games (W3 D1 L2). They’ve scored no more than once in 10 of their past 12 Premier League games – including all of their past six when away from home.

I think our prospects of seeing a flowing, entertaining encounter are very slim even when taking into account Everton’s propensity for conceding at home. Seven of the last eleven league games at Goodison Park went Under 2.5 Goals, with Everton scoring no more than once in all but one. Moreover, Wolves are averaging 0.75 goals per game across their last eight away matches, seven of which went Under 2.5 Goals.
