The Premiership Final that almost wasn’t, is on. It is confirmed that Wasps will take their place against Exeter on Saturday.

This is, perhaps fittingly, a duel between the top-two finishers at the end of the regular season of the Premiership.

Exeter were already going into the match as favourites.

With Wasps, as the time of writing, having 11 players missing from their squad, the Chiefs have been cut further for success.

Exeter Chiefs Preview – Chiefs to complete a famous double?

With the Heineken Cup under their belt from last weekend’s action against Racing 92, Exeter are on for a double.

The Chiefs will be looking for their second Premiership title.

Their first one came in 2017 when they beat Wasps in a thriller.

It was a nailbiting 23-20 win after extra time that gave Exeter their success.

But this is the fifth straight Premiership final that they have been in, on each of the other occasions they were downed by Saracens.

The Chiefs finished top of the Premiership table at a canter, taking things easy in their final few matches.

That allowed them to concentrate on their European campaign.

In the semifinals of the Premiership, Exeter were up against Bath.

Despite being on the backfoot early in the game, Exeter ended up crushing their opponents 35-6.

There is no real value in the match outright for backing Exeter.

So for rugby betting in this one, an Exeter -11 handicap is at 10/11* (odds taken 0256 GMT, Friday, 23rd October).

Our betting prediction:

Exeter traded home wins with Wasps in this season’s Premiership campaign.

Exeter took a 38-3 win on home soil, before losing 46-5 at the Ricoh in their return in early October.

The Chiefs had already had the top spot wrapped up by then so weren’t at full strength.

The head to head from recent meetings are slightly in favour of Wasps as they are W3 L2 against Exeter in the last five.

Wasps Preview – Can Wasps make the most of final appearance?

It looked at one point as if Wasps weren’t going to be able to take their place in the Final because of a swathe of positive test results.

But they have the all-clear, but head coach Lee Blackett confirmed that he will be missing 11 players from his squad for the match.

So preparations really couldn’t have been worse for them. But there’s been no indication of who exactly is missing.

Wasps haven’t played for a couple of weeks so could perhaps have an advantage of being slightly fresher than their opponents on the day.

Wasps finished second to Exeter in the Premiership table, hitting some powerful form once the season was restarted.

Blackett’s men were playing some fantastic, powerful and attacking rugby and closed out the season on a seven match winning streak.

In four of their last five matches of the campaign, Wasps put at least 40 points on the board.

We would expect them to be in touch at the end of the first half and an Exeter 1-7 Half Time Winning Margin is at 7/1* (odds taken 0256 GMT, Friday, 23rd October).

This is the first time since that 2017 final against Exeter that Wasps have been back to the Premiership final.

Only Leicester have won the Premiership title more times than Wasps, who have collected the title six times.

The last time that they tasted success was at the end of the 2008 campaign.

Even on a level playing field with Exeter, Wasps will have come into this match as underdogs.

They are going to have to defy 4/1 underdogs from the bookmakers to pick up a success on the weekend* (odds taken 0256 GMT, Friday, 23rd October).

In their semi final fixture, Wasps took a 47-24 win over the Bristol Bears.

Exeter Chiefs vs Wasps Betting Advice

We would side with the Chiefs winning this. They just have such a phenomenal winning mentality when they are on their game.

They showed that in holding off Racing 92 in the Heineken Cup Final last weekend.

Will that extra workload have taken anything away from them ahead of this contest? We don’t think so.

They looked sharp and supremely competitive and would back them to come away with an 11-20 Winning Margin at 11/5* (odds taken 0256 GMT, Friday, 23rd October)

Key Facts – Exeter Chiefs vs Wasps Betting Tip

  • Exeter Chiefs are aiming to win their second Premiership title
  • Exeter Chiefs beat Wasps in the 2017 Final in Extra Time
  • Wasps are W3 L2 in their last five against Exeter

The extra break could have worked against Wasps, losing a bit of momentum in terms of match sharpness.

They were on a fantastic roll to close out the season and get to where they are at.

Given their disruptions this week, not even knowing if they were going to be playing or not, can’t have helped the mental side of their game.

We expect them to give a good account of themselves in the early stages at tWickenham, but the sheer power and control that Exeter exerts, should win the day.
