It’s a long time since two teams who lost the first leg of their play-off semi-finals have progressed to the final. But the players of Exeter and Northampton have worked hard to get this far and will want to complete the comeback by triumphing at Wembley

Exeter Preview – Grecians hoping to end Wembley hoodoo

Exeter City have won a Conference play-off but lost the League Two Play-Off Final in 2017 and again in 2018 so Wembley hasn’t been a happy hunting ground so far for Devonians.

There will be no fans this year, of course, but the Grecians will be supported by a 1,200-strong army of cardboard cut-outs featuring images of some of their most loyal supporters.

Having lost the first leg of their semi-final against Colchester, City finally came through at St James Park in extra-time. That should have left no lasting effects with a full week to recover from their exertions and key players doing little more than tick over since the semi-finals.

Ryan Bowman scored the goal that eventually sealed Exeter’s semi-final victory and he’ll be a key players again for Matt Taylor’s side. Johnny Maxted’s will likely get the nod in goal again ahead of Lewis Ward, while Nicky Law will be asked to provide the steel in midfield against a physical Northampton team.

Exeter will, however, take heart that they finished seven points above the Cobblers in the regular season and confidence should be restored now that they’ve got a win under their belts.

Northampton Preview – Cobblers’ record in head-to-heads offers encouragement

Northampton have won six of their last nine matches against Exeter City in all competitions, including their latest meeting at Sixfields in February.

Exeter, in fact, have only beaten the Cobblers once since 2013 and Town should have at least drawn in Devon in December having scored first and last.

Charlie Goode scored in that game and the skipper has popped up with some important goals for his team this season, though it was young loanee Callum Morton who was the hero of their stunning second-leg victory at Cheltenham after Vadaine Oliver had given the home defence a torrid time.

Keith Curle’s side were certainly more potent with the return of Sam Hoskins and they will almost certainly be taking the game to Exeter in the early stages.

The worry for Northampton fans is whether their team will run out of steam on Wembley’s wide-open spaces. Exeter are almost certainly better in possession and could give their opponents the runaround in the last half-hour, though the regulatory drinks breaks will help with any stamina deficiencies and it is also a plus that the heatwave is over for the time being.

The manager will have a fully-fit squad to choose from as long as there are no positive Covid-19 tests in the days before the final and Curle will be making full use of his subs bench again.
