Famalicao Preview – Cruise control now for newcomers?

Previously the long-term assistant to former Everton manager Marco Silva, a 48-year-old Joao Pedro Sousa initially did a tremendous job in getting this team prepared for the challenges of Primeira Liga football. The club, relatively obscure, are based in northern Portugal and spent more than a quarter of the last century floating outside the country’s top tier, and so therefore a period of acclimation was presumably needed. Not so.

Wasting no time whatsoever, Famalicao (7th – W10 D7 L7) would embark on an astonishing start that would see them record six victories through Matchdays 1 to 7, not incurring a first defeat until encountering the indomitable FC Porto at Estadio do Dragao in late October. A 3-0 loss followed, but by that time the groundwork was already laid, allowing them to adsorb some of the impact of a subsequent slump.

Despite a fairly marked decline in output during the proceeding months, Famalicao are still in the top-half and under no threat from relegation. It is, however, three wins from the last fourteen in the league (W3 D6 L6), while a 3-1 triumph over Sporting CP remains their sole win in five at home (D2 L2) during which time they were notably humbled 7-0 by Guimaraes.

FC Porto Preview – Title aspirations demand maximum points?

Should a 29th Primeira Liga title win not materialise in late July, when the season is scheduled to finish, then FC Porto (1st – W19 D3 L2) would have nobody to blame but themselves. Beating Benfica 3-2 at Estadio do Dragao in February was a significant step towards wrestling back a crown surrendered in 2018-19 when ultimately coming up two points short. However, the lead as it stands remains precarious.

A 1-1 draw with Rio Ave, in Porto no less, immediately prior to the pandemic means all that Sergio Conceicao and his players have to work with is a solitary point. It’s an advantage – and in a league where the better teams can often reel off lengthy winning streaks, a potentially decisive advantage – but it leaves almost no room for error. Although not having to face Benfica again clearly works in their favour.

There can be no complacency, then. Porto were in good shape previously, racking up six straight wins before that aforementioned draw with Rio Ave. So they clearly had the bit between their teeth. Away from home they’ve won their last five contests, scoring at least two goals on each occasion, and thus boast the necessary firepower to power through a potentially awkward road encounter.

Famalicao Vs FC Porto Betting Advice

For Porto, only a win will suffice. The enforced break did work against them, though, as they were in strong form beforehand with six wins and a draw from their last seven in Primeira Liga. The same could not be said for Famalicao, unfortunately, whose results have unsurprisingly nosedived since those astonishing first few weeks of the season, winning one of their last eight league games (W1 D4 L3) and only once at home since January (W1 D2 L2).

Famalicao Vs FC Porto Key Facts

  • With 21 conceded after 12 home matches played (1.75 per game), Famalicao are posting the worst defensive numbers in Primeira Liga in 2019/20.
  • Porto have scored at least twice in each of the last five Primeira Liga away games, winning all five.
  • A comfortable 3-0 win for Porto on Matchday 8 means Famalicao have it all to do if they’re to defy the odds at the second attempt.

Not only the quality but the desire to pick up three crucial points should ultimately tell here for Porto. However, Famalicao frequently find the net on their own turf, doing so in 10 of 12 so far, so could scare their illustrious visitors. FC Porto & Over 2.5 Goals stand out at 11/10 (PaddyPower).
