Faroe Islands – Hosts unlikely to pull off shock victory?

A first ever appearance at the finals of a World Cup already appears to be out of reach for the Faroe Islands. All four points, along with three of their four goals scored, all came against the sole country ranked lower than them in Group F. That would be 180-ranked Moldova, who came close to beating Hakan Ericson’s side in Chisinau (1-1) before going down gallantly in the return fixture, succumbing 2-1 here in Torshavn.

That they struggled against a nation considerably worse off in the rankings doesn’t bode well as they go seeking only a second ever victory against the Austrians (D1 L5), losing the previous four head-to-heads by an aggregate of 2-15. Among them a 3-1 reverse in Vienna last March that preceded successive 4-0 losses to Israel and Scotland. Though last month’s 1-0 loss at home to the Danes did restore some pride.

Austria – Win or bust for Foda’s faltering charges?

Any notion ‘Das Team’ would bring a level of confidence into the resumption of World Cup qualifying following their European Championship exploits, exiting to eventual winners Italy in the last sixteen, has proven premature. Last month, Franco Foda’s men dropped six points out of nine, following up a fairly routine win in Moldova by losing a couple of hugely important fixtures against Israel (5-2) and Scotland (0-1).

Consequently, Austria verge on win or bust territory. With the Danes boasting an unassailable advantage at the top, the battle for second place is well and truly on in Group F. Yet with four points to make up on incumbents Scotland, and with a daunting trek to Copenhagen in three days time, a team with just three wins in ten internationals won’t need reminding of the importance of three points in Torshavn.

Key Stat: Austria haven’t registered a clean sheet in 11 of their last 14 internationals, conceding seven times across three away qualifying matches this campaign.

In Torshavn this Sunday, Austria will be expected to make it three wins from seven in Group F. Not because of any noteworthy recent form – far from it, with only three wins from their past ten matches – but on account of a one-sided head-to-head record in their favour. Since winning the very first meeting 1-0, the Faroe Islands haven’t won any of six subsequent renewals, losing each of the last four by a margin of at least two.

 

 

There could be some value in backing the hosts adding to the visitors’ defensive woes, though.
