FC Koln Preview – Billy Goats boasting superior form?

The Billy Goats have given themselves an excellent shot at extending their stay in Germany’s top tier beyond the end of this season. Something that seemed uncertain to say the least in early December, when the team found itself in the relegation places after registering two wins from their opening 14 Bundesliga fixtures. Markus Gisdol’s side have since chalked up six wins from the last eight, culminating in last week’s stunning 5-0 demolition away to Hertha Berlin.

FC Koln (13th – W8 D2 L12) were sent on their way to victory early in that match courtesy of a quick-fire brace from top scorer Jhon Cordoba, who took his league tally for the season to nine by scoring twice inside the opening 22 minutes. Gisdol had seen his side race into a commanding 3-0 lead before the interval. By the time Mark Uth had wrapped up the scoring past the hour mark, the team had already surpassed their previous best haul of goals for the campaign.

Last week was also the perfect riposte to having been beaten somewhat routinely at home by Bayern Munich during the preceding round, with the 4-1 defeat bringing to an end a five-game unbeaten period (W4 D1) for the hosts inside their Mungersdorfer Stadion. Koln had won four on the bounce in Cologne prior to the German champions making an appearance. The latter statistic serving to highlight how impressive Koln have been recently on their own patch.

Schalke Preview – Royal Blues suddenly suffering under Wagner?

The season peaked earlier than usual for Schalke (6th – W9 D9 L4), who were embroiled in a desperate scrap for Bundesliga survival last season but begun this latest term better than anyone. Come the end of September they were among a medium-sized contingent all vying for the lead, even assuming the outright lead on the back of four straight victories. We are now approaching March and The Royal Blues are no longer keeping that same illustrious company – and, in actual fact, could soon find themselves out of European contention at their current rate.

Losing at home to a ruthless RB Leipzig last weekend, as David Wagner’s side shipped five goals for the second time within the space of a month, was the latest in a now long line of disappointing results that has seen Schalke struggle to win games. It is now five (D3 L2) without doing so, collecting a meager three points from the last 15 available to drop into sixth position, some seven points adrift of the top-four and those coveted Champions League berths.

Recent defeats can be dismissed to some extent – getting something from games against Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig was always going to be difficult – however, failure to dispatch the teams in 14th (Hertha Berlin, 0-0), 15th (Mainz, 0-0) and 18th (Paderborn, 1-1) is more inexcusable, especially how they could only manage a single effort across three eminently winnable fixtures. On the road meanwhile, Schalke are over five hours without an away goal having not won such a match since beating Werder Bremen 2-1 in November (D3 L2 thereafter).

FC Koln Vs Schalke Betting Advice

There hasn’t been a winner in any of the previous four league meetings between these two, with all four encounters delivering scoring draws. Schalke haven’t scored in any of their last three away fixtures in the Bundesliga but did draw three of the last four away, so another stalemate here is hardly out of the question. The hosts might have other ideas, however.

FC Koln Vs Schalke – Key Facts

  • FC Koln have tasted defeat on one occasion in their previous five home Bundesliga games (W4 D1 L1) and have scored at least once in eight consecutive home games.
  • Schalke are without a league win for five games (D3 L2) as well as going their last five away matches without registering a victory (D3 L2), failing to score on their previous three road outings.
  • There has been a drawn encounter between these two teams in each of the previous four Bundesliga meetings – all four featured both teams scoring.

FC Koln are undoubtedly the form side here. Six wins from their last eight in the Bundesliga, an excellent run that includes four wins in five on home turf. They’ve scored at least once in not only the previous eight league fixtures but in all of the most recent eight staged in Cologne, suggesting they carry a significant threat in front of goal that the visitors are distinctly lacking in. FC Koln & Under 3.5 Goals is 11/5 (PaddyPower).
