Preview: Promoted from the league below as champions last season, FC Tambov are still searching for their first points in the Russian Premier League after failing to defy the odds in their opening two fixtures. The task doesn’t get a great deal easier in their next game either, but will at least have home comforts to their advantage when they welcome Spartak Moscow to the ironically named Spartak Stadium.

FC Tambov Preview – Wolves to build on early encouragement?

No club were handed a more daunting start to the new Premier League season than newly promoted Tambov, whose opening fixtures consisted of trips to Lokomotiv Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg – the former a runner-up last term, while the latter finished as the eventual champions. The fact ‘The Wolves’ gave a good account of themselves in both, only losing by the odd goal in each, should provide them with plenty of encouragement ahead of future engagements.

Tambov were beaten by the same scoreline (2-1) in each of their opening two games. The 2-1 correct score for Spartak Moscow is 15/2 with Betway. While you would naturally assume their chances of being on the end of a more positive outcome might increase now they are back at home, conversely it was on their travels where the team tended to do their best work last season.

En route to securing promotion from the Russian National Football League as champions, Tambov only registered three more points at home compared with away, with their record at home (W11 D5 L3, GF31 GA17) bettered by two other teams in the league below. Just one team could better their rate of goals at home, however, and after netting at two formidable venues already this season, will definitely fancy their chances of notching at least one goal here.

Spartak Moscow Preview – Another promoted scalp in the offing?

Unable to withstand some late pressure, Spartak Moscow eventually caved in to concede a late leveller away to Rostov in their recent Premier League fixture. As disappointing as it was to concede so late and surrender a couple of points, to come away from one of the more tricky away assignments on the schedule relatively unscathed whilst producing a decent performance, will have no doubt pleased manager Oleg Kononov.

That point in Rostov also complements the three registered on the opening weekend, when they edged out the other newly promoted side, Sochi. Now they face the champions from the league below in the previous season, and they will be feeling reasonably confident about their chances of another successful outcome. Not least because of their valiant efforts last time out.

To finish only 5th last season would have fallen below the club’s expectations, but one positive to be had from their endeavours was a strong away record (W7 D4 L4) – only Krasnodar collected more points away from home in the 2018-19 Premier League. Their tally of 17 away goals was relatively modest, however, with that figure bettered by all of their main rivals with the exception of CSKA Moscow.

Spartak recorded seven victories on the road in total, two of which coming against promoted sides in the form of Yenisey (2-3) and Kryliya Sovetov (1-2). As encouraging as that may seem, they did go down 2-0 at another promoted side on the final day of the season, losing to Orenburg.

Tambov V Spartak Moscow Key Facts:

  • Tambov earned promotion from the Russian National Football League with a home record of W11 D5 L3.
  • Spartak Moscow produced the second-strongest away figures in last season’s Russian Premier League (W7 D4 L4).
  • This will be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs, although Spartak did beat two out of three newly promoted teams away from home last term.

Betting Summary

Some encouraging displays, albeit in losing efforts in their opening games away to Lokomotiv Moscow and Zenit, should have instilled Tambov with a fair degree of confidence they can compete at this level. Although their record at home in last season’s RNFL was good rather than great (W11 D5 L3, GF31 GA17).

Spartak Moscow won’t have settled for a final placement of 5th last term, and will demand a lot better in the forthcoming campaign. Their start has been one of promise so far – a hard-fought victory at home to Sochi was followed up by a 2-2 draw at Rostov, which could quite easily have been a second straight win were it not for the late concession of goal.

A theme of Spartak’s meetings with promoted teams in the last campaign was goals, more often than not for both sides. The Moscow club failed to record a single clean sheet away to a side new to the division last time around, so there is every chance Tambov will get some joy here.
