Preview: The Russian Premier is hotting up nicely as three teams occupy a share of the lead. Neither are in action here, though, but one side keen to make up lost ground on that trio certainly are, as sixth-place Spartak Moscow set about reducing the deficit when they take on FC Ufa, who will host this fixture at their Neftyanik Stadium.

FC Ufa Preview – Fourth home triumph of the season beckons?

There are some teams who make winning away from home look and feel as though it must be an impossible task. It isn’t, of course, but for some it is an almighty struggle. FC Ufa are that team, with their most recent away victory in the league dating back to March of 2018 – they would fail to record a single win on their travels in the whole of 2018/19. Every home fixture, therefore, is of massive significance.

FC Ufa would collect 17 of their 26 points in the previous league campaign from home encounters (W5 D2 L8, GF15 GA17 – at home in 2018/19 RPL). The club would barely survive the drop, finishing one position above the automatic relegation places, but it could have been a more dire situation had it not been for those improved contributions at home.

This season has been no different. A bright start, comprising of three wins from their opening nine matches (W3 D2 L4), has them in ninth position. The pattern, though, has been the exact same with all three of their victories thus far coming at home (W3 D0 L2). One of those triumphs was a stunning 1-0 win over the champions, inflicting Zenit’s only loss of the campaign so far.

It has been downhill a little since, losing at home to Orenburg (1-2) before holding Dynamo Moscow to a goalless draw in the capital. They’re certainly erratic, then, but dangerously capable in front of their home supporters.

Spartak Moscow Preview – 2016/17 champs to return to winning ways?

There is to be no European football served up by Spartak Moscow this season. The club tried but were eliminated in the Europa League qualifying rounds last month by Portugal’s Sporting Braga. So in the same week some of their rivals were busy exerting themselves in continental competitions, Oleg Kononov and his players were in Russia recuperating – and probably doing some recovering as well following last weekend’s surprising home defeat at the hands of FC Ural (1-2).

That loss last time out was Spartak’s third in the league this season (W4 D2 L3), and their second in successive fashion having lost 1-0 at home to Zenit prior to the recent international break. It has cost them vital ground, as while they do currently occupy a European berth in sixth, only the top three qualify for next season’s Champions League to which Spartak are already six points off the pace.

The good news I suppose, in relation to them having lost their last two home games, is that they are back on the road again here. Their away form has actually been rather good, too, recording only the one defeat on their travels so far this season (W2 D1 L1 away from home). Were they to clinch all three points on Friday, it would be a third consecutive away win after successes at Akhmat Grozny (1-3) and Krylya Sovetov (1-2).

Furthermore, any likelihood of there being goals would appear healthy: all four of Spartak’s away Premier League games this season have produced a minimum of two goals, with all but one featuring both teams on the scoresheet.

FC Ufa V Spartak Moscow Key Facts:

  • All three of FC Ufa‘s Premier League victories this season were earned at home (W3 D0 L2 at home this season).
  • Spartak Moscow are bidding to secure a third successive away win in the Russian Premier League (W2 D1 L1 away from home this season).
  • Last season’s corresponding fixture ended 2-0 in favour of FC Ufa, who have an overall record at home to Spartak Moscow of W2 D1 L2.

Betting Summary

There is a chasm of difference between what FC Ufa are capable of producing in front of their own fans as opposed to away from home. All five of their league victories in 2018/19 were earned at home, and it has been a similar story this season with all three of their wins occurring on home soil. So while this team does clearly fall into that relegation candidate bracket, they can be dangerous at home – as was the case when inflicting a shock 1-0 defeat on champions Zenit last month.

Having suffered defeat in their last two league games, Spartak Moscow will be keen to stop the rot sooner rather than later, before it develops into something more damaging. Both losses were at home, though, and victory here would be their third away win on the spin on the road having only lost once away from home all season (W2 D1 L1).

This fixture was won 2-0 by FC Ufa last season, with Spartak failing to win on their previous two visits (D1 L1). The latter possess the greater talent within their ranks, but recent form has dipped. That makes them vulnerable here, against an opponent with a tendency to maximise home advantage. Ufa have scored in all five home games thus far, while Spartak have scored in three of their four away fixtures. So it could be smart banking on both teams obliging.
