Ferencvarosi Preview – Hungarian champions to maximize home advantage?

This time last year the club were eliminated from European competition altogether, exiting in the first round of Europa League qualifying. Ferencvarosi then took the drastic, and immediate, decision to relieve the manager of his duties and boldly appoint former Dynamo Kiev coach Sergei Rebrov. It was a decision which instantly produced results, as the club surged to a 30th Hungarian league title to finish with clear distance between themselves and the remainder of the division.

As impressive as their dominant performance in the league was – and it certainly was, as the club finished 13 points clear at the summit whilst entertaining supporters with 2.18 goals per game – it is in Europe where the club craves relevance. Losing in the first qualifying round to Isreali side Maccabi Tel Aviv twelve months ago was deemed unacceptable (losing 2-1 on aggregate). Therefore, there will be a lot of pressure on this team ahead of another attempt at securing group stage football on the continent.

The team won’t be lacking in confidence, though. Especially at their Groupama Arena, where they have been in inspired form. Rebrov’s players went unbeaten on home soil throughout the whole of the previous league campaign, winning 14 out of 17 games which included a stunning 11-match winning streak that is still very much going strong. No team prevented them from scoring at home either, averaging 2.65 goals per game.

So this first leg is crucial, with it imperative Ferencvarosi seize on all this momentum when playing in front of their home support. Serie A journeyman Davide Lanzafame has been integral to their success in the past year and will be their primary threat. The 32-year-old found the back of the net 17 times in all competitions in what was his debut season in the country.

Ludogorets Preview – Recent experience of European competition to shine through?

The influence of Ludogorets on Bulgarian football has been immense. Bossing matters domestically is one thing, but the club has put the country firmly back on the map with their performances in continental competitions. The Eagles have competed in the group stages in every season since 2013-14 , enjoying two campaigns in the Champions League and three in the Europa League.

So these qualifying rounds are unlikely to intimidate a group of players now accustomed to the magnitude of such occasions. Although, it has now been two successive seasons whereby the club has failed in its quest to qualify for the Champions League group stage. Last season’s disappointment in particular certainly feels more apt now, exiting early to MOL Vidi 1-0 on aggregate. That was against a team which finished a distance behind Ferencvarosi in Hungary last term.

All the damage in that particular tie was dealt in Hungary. Unfortunately, this has been a recurring theme as apart from a fairly routine and expected 2-0 win over in Northern Ireland against Crusaders, Ludogorets have struggled on their travels in recent Champions League qualifiers. Last season there was obviously MOL Vidi, but the season before saw them fall to defeats in Lithuania and Israel, to Zalgiris (2-1) and Hapoel Be’er Sheva (2-0) respectively.

However, the Bulgarians were at least more efficient on the domestic front. A 1-0 reverse to Cherno More being their only away defeat of the campaign during the regular season (W8 D4 L1), scoring in all but three games. They will also be well aware of the significance of scoring an away goal here, although their form back at home is strong enough to suggest a goal in Hungary isn’t exactly a necessity.

Ferencvaros V Ludogorets Key Facts:

  • Ferencvaros went undefeated at home (W14 D3 L0) en route to clinching the Hungarian league title last season.
  • Ludogorets have failed to qualify for the Champions League in each of the past two seasons but did spend both in the Europa League group stages.
  • This will be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs, although Ludogorets do have recent history with Hungarian clubs. They were eliminated by MOL Vidi in a CL Qualifier last season.

Betting Summary

Ludogorets possess a wealth of experience in European qualifiers – and European competitions in general, having competed in the group stages of both in recent times – but have come unstuck in the Champions League qualifiers in the past couple seasons. That includes last year, when they were edged out 1-0 on aggregate by MOL Vidi, a team inferior to Ferencvarosi in Hungary last season to the margin of 13 points.

This home leg is massive as far as Ferencvarosi are concerned. The group stages of Europe’s elite club competitions have eluded them for too long and the club’s desire for an imminent return is abundantly clear. If that is to happen, their superb form at home needs to continue. As heading over to Bulgaria requiring a positive outcome would be a big ask against a streetwise opponent.

The home side are a decent price to gain the upper hand by winning this first encounter, at a ground where they’ve been utterly dominant at for the past year. Time to translate that on to the European stage.
