Celtic took the spoils when these teams met a fortnight ago and Ferencvaros know that they have to get a win here to keep their European hopes alive.

Ferencvaros Preview – Can Hungarian champs keep their European hopes alive with a win here?

It’s been a trying time of it for Ferencvaros so far in Group G. They sit bottom of the section with no points having lost away to Bayer Leverkusen and Celtic whilst Real Betis also defeated them in Hungary. Their best performance to date was in Germany but they have been on level terms going into the closing stages in their first two matches, only to succumb late on.

Their display in Glasgow last month was pretty tame, however, and they rarely troubled Celtic. Unlike the last time they faced the Scottish club, Ferencvaros actually beat the Hoops at the start of last season – en route to the group stages of the Champions League.

Peter Stoger will not be panicking just yet, though, as a win here would put them back in contention for finishing third and qualifying for some sort of European football after Christmas.

If they are to get a result then forward Ryan Mmaee will have to produce more in this game than he did in the first meeting with Celtic. He’s scored six in eight league matches and also found the net against Leverkusen. Strike partner Tokmak Nguen is known to Celtic – he scored the winning goal in the 2-1 victory last season.

Celtic Preview – Are Hoops set to do the double of their opponents and stay in contention for a top two spot?

Celtic sit in third spot in the section thanks to goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and David Turnbull at Celtic Park. It was a much-needed victory following defeats to Betis and Leverkusen in their first two group matches. Celtic held a two goal lead in Spain before eventually losing 4-3 whilst they paid for missed chances and terrible defensive lapses in a 4-0 loss at home to the Germans. They now know that a win over their Hungarian hosts will essentially guarantee them third and some sort of European football in the New Year.

Ange Postecoglou has won just one of his four away games in Europe since taking over at Celtic, that being a comfortable win away to Jablonec in the third round of qualification of the Europa League. The other two games being losses in Denmark and the Netherlands.

Celtic’s form in general has improved over the last months and they put together a five match winning run in all competitions. That came to an end on Saturday when drawing 0-0 with Livingston, missing a last-minute penalty into the bargain.

Postecoglou will be without several first-team starters for this game, most notably Carl Starfelt and Tom Rogic. Both have been impressive in recent times and the latter especially will be a big miss as he continues to be Celtic’s main creative force in midfield.

Ferencvaros vs Celtic Betting Advice

It’s hard to imagine that Ferencvaros will be as poor as they were when the teams met just over two weeks ago. Celtic were dominant throughout and the 2-0 score line actually flattered the Hungarian champions. With home advantage and knowing that anything less than a win would probably see them finish bottom of the group, they will hope to be a lot more competitive.

For the visitors, they have been better and more consistent in their performances of late. Although they may not have had much joy in their away matches on the continent in recent times, they were good for long spells against Betis and will feel they can trouble their hosts.

Key Facts – Ferencvaros vs Celtic Betting Tip

  • Ferencavros remain in search of their first points in this Europa League group stage
  • Celtic have won one of four away games in Europe under Ange Postecoglou
  • This will be the third meeting in little over a year as the Hungarians knocked Celtic out last season’s Champions League

Celtic had the firepower in the first game and that may well prove to be the difference here. Take them to do the double over Ferencvaros.
