De Klassieker is the biggest rivalry game in the Netherlands and we get to sample the latest instalment on Sunday at one of Europe’s most atmospheric stadiums, De Kuip. Continue reading for a match preview of Feyenoord v Ajax with a selected best betting tip.

Feyenoord Preview

Feyenoord won the Dutch league title back in 2017 and although they were unable to retain it, they added the Dutch Cup to their trophy haul last season. It’s made for a successful period under Giovanni Van Bronckhurst who is now in his fourth season in charge. This season has been one of frustration as the Rotterdam club have been unable to keep pace with PSV and Ajax at the top of the table but they currently sit in third spot and look set to be well clear of the chasing pack come the end of the campaign. The disparity in finances of the top three clubs means that it’s always going to be difficult for Feyenoord to get the better of their two rivals and it makes that title success from two years ago all the better. The visit of Ajax, however, will focus the mind of everybody at the club in what is their biggest game of any season. A win would see the gap between themselves and their enemies from Amsterdam reduced to three and perhaps get them dreaming of surprise title charge but the bragging points and getting one over Ajax will be enough to satisfy their extremely passionate supporters.

Key-Facts – Feyenoord v Ajax

  • Feyenoord have lost only one home game this season whilst Ajax have lost only once on the road
  • Ajax have scored eight more goals on their travels than Feyenoord have managed at home
  • Feynoord are out for revenge having lost the reverse fixture 3-0 back in October

Ajax Preview

Ajax spent big in the summer in an attempt to win their first Dutch title for five seasons. In addition to Feyenoord finishing top two years ago, PSV have won the other three – making it an extremely frustrating period for the Amsterdam giants. Eril Ten Haag has earned plenty of plaudits for the way in which his team plays but it is the most expensively assembled squad in the division with some extremely talented players, so trailing PSV by five points could be seen as an underachievement in some quarters. Ajax have been extremely impressive at times, for the majority of the campaign in fact, but they are up against a formidable opponent in PSV, this season, and any slip-up is looking like it will be punished with the title set to be decided by the finest of margins. Ajax know that to cut that gap between themselves and the leaders to two points once only a win will suffice following the Eindhoven club winning their home match on Saturday.

Feyenoord v Ajax Betting Advice

These games are standout fixtures in the Netherlands and the atmosphere tends to be at fever pitch. It can often go above and beyond that, though, and Ajax took the decision to decline tickets for their supporters at the De Kuip between 2014-17. PSV will be watching on with great interest having done their job for the week, hoping Feyenoord can do them a favour by getting a result on Sunday. The hosts have a very strong home record with eight wins in their nine league games and conceding just seven goals. Their biggest win thus far was undoubtedly the 2-1 success of the leaders at the beginning of December which will give them great belief for tomorrow’s game. Ajax were victorious when the teams last back in October, cruising to a 3-0 win but will be well aware of how different this opponent is when playing in front of their own fans, albeit the visitors have the best away record in the league and have lost only to PSV on the road – winning all of their others eight.

It’s called The Classic and it’s set up to be just that on Sunday. Feyenoord can inch closer to the top two with a win and it would also put a huge dent in the title hopes of their arch rivals. Ajax will feel that they have to win to keep pace with leaders PSV in what has been an extremely close title race all season and they do have superior quality in their ranks which I’m backing to see them to a vital three points.
