Finland opened their account in Group 2 with a solid 1-0 home win over Hungary, and no doubt tonight’s hosts will be keen to make it four wins from five matches when they return to their Helsingin olympiastadion in Helsinki for this important group clash.
The hosts have won three of their last four matches overall with wins against Malta 5-0, Belarus 2-0 and Hungary 1-0, with their only blip in recent times being a 2-0 loss away at Romania in a friendly back in early June.
With just one defeat from their last 11 matches in all competitions, Finland will be confident they can take all three points here and move clear of anticipated promotion rivals, Greece at the top of the group.
Estonia’s recent results seem to be going from bad to worse as they stumbled to a fourth defeat in five matches with an opening 1-0 loss at home to Greece, and they now face a tough trip to Helsinki to take on a solid Finland outfit here this evening.
Recent defeats to Georgia, Latvia, Morocco and Greece underline how difficult it has been for Estonia to get any sort of unbeaten run together, while away from home it’s now five matches without a win on their travels.
The visitors did managed to grab a point in a 1-1 draw away at Sweden back in January this year, but that has rather been the exception than the rule, and their last visit to Finland ended in a heavy 3-0 defeat in November of last year.
