Preview: In Saint Petersburg, Finland will look to spring another shock in an attempt to secure the win that would send them through to the Round of 16. Belgium, on the other hand, are already into the next round after winning both group games thus far, and will do so as Group B winners provided they avoid defeat.

Finland – Has best shot at progression been and gone?

Euro 2020 debutants Finland made a dreamt start to their maiden participation at a major tournament, demonstrating composure under testing circumstances, as well as a huge amount of resilience to withstand unrelenting Danish pressure in Copenhagen, to claim a momentous 1-0 victory. In truth they didn’t do a lot different in their following game, but were punished by a rare moment of brilliance.

The Finns would have qualified for the last-sixteen with victory over Russia. Instead it was they who found themselves on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline. Only one team has ever featured in three successive matches to finish 1-0 at a European Championship and that was the similarly unfancied Greece at Euro 2004, who went on to defeat Portugal in the final to famously lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy.

Nobody expects Markku Kanerva and his players to perform similar heroics. We can, however, demand more than a combined two shots on target across both matches – one of which was the winner against the Danes, their sole win in their previous eight internationals (D2 L5). We also need to see more from star man Teemu Pukki, who has been quiet so far after top-scoring in qualifying with ten strikes.

Belgium Win To Nil

Belgium – Red Devils seeking flawless conclusion to group stage?

For the first time, Belgium have won their opening two games of a European Championship, brushing aside Russia to win 3-0 in Saint Petersburg before rallying in the second half to claw back an early deficit to beat Denmark 2-1 in Copenhagen. They now have an opportunity to win all three group games for the second major tournament in a row, after doing so three years earlier at the World Cup.

A potential spanner in the works could be their opponents. Belgium last registered a victory over Finland in 1968, failing in all seven subsequent meetings (D3 L4) with the most recent a 1-1 draw in Brussels in a 2016 friendly. Factor in the potential for a much-changed team, having already booked their place in the next round, and the likelihood of this peculiar barren run extending seemingly grows.

However, Roberto Martinez has already provided a big hint as to who will start in search of a win which would see them top Group B. Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne starred from the bench last time against Denmark, contributing an assist each, and both are in line to start. De Bruyne scored with a trademark effort from range in that game and PaddyPower go 5/1 about him netting from outside the box here.

Finland Vs Belgium Betting Advice

Surprisingly, it is seven consecutive matches versus Finland without a win for Belgium. In addition, none of the last five produced Over 2.5 Goals. Therefore, anyone anticipating a rout could be disappointed – particularly as there is more riding on the result for the Finns, who know even a draw could be enough see them potentially sneak through to the knockout stages alongside the Belgians.

Finland Vs Belgium – Key Facts:

  • None of the previous five matches between Finland and Belgium produced more than two goals, while Finland are unbeaten across the last seven meetings (W4 D3).
  • Belgium (W2) sit top of Group B, scoring five and conceding only once. Finland (W1 L1) occupy third having scored as many as they have conceded so far (1).
  • The Red Devils won all three group games at their last major tournament (2018 World Cup) but are bidding to do just that for the very first time at a European Championship.

Despite already qualifying and the risk of rotation, bookmakers still view a Belgium victory as the most likely outcome. There has certainly been no shortage of endeavour from Finland at these finals, with both games ending 1-0 (W1 L1). The quality hasn’t really been there, though, mustering only two shots on target from the second-lowest xG figures of all teams who had played twice at the time of writing.
