Fiorentina Preview – Can Viola make the most of being on home turf?
After going four games without a win, Giuseppe Iachini’s Fiorentina sealed a narrow victory over SPAL in Serie A last weekend. It was a much-needed three points for Viola, who had not won for four games. German Pezzella’s late goal was enough to give them a 1-0 triumph at the Artemio Franchi.
Fiorentina have struggled on their own patch this season, winning just three Serie A home matches. Along the way, Viola have drawn three and lost four of the other seven. Last weekend’s win over SPAL was only their second home victory since October.
Fiorentina, who finished 16th last season, are currently in 14th position in Serie A. The club from Florence have won five, drawn six and lost eight of their 19 league fixtures thus far.
Fiorentina have won the Coppa Italia on six occasions, though the last of those victories came way back in 2001. Only Juventus, Roma, Inter Milan and Lazio have won it more times. Having seen off Monza and Cittadella so far, can they get past Atalanta on Wednesday?
Atalanta Preview – Will La Dea return to winning ways on the road?
Since securing back-to-back 3-0 away wins at Brescia and Shakhtar Donetsk (UEFA Champions League), Atalanta have failed to win any of their last two on the road. Gian Piero Gasperini’s troops lost at Bologna before drawing with Inter at the San Siro last weekend.
La Dea shocked Serie A by finishing in third place last season, qualifying for the Champions League in the process. The Black and Blues are having another fine season in Italy’s top tier, as they are fourth behind Juve, Inter and Lazio after 19 games. Finishing in the top four will be their main priority again.

Atalanta have been superb away from home in the league thus far, winning five of ten and losing just once. Only high-flying Inter and Juve have picked up more away points in Serie A up until now.
The side from Bergamo have won the Coppa Italia just once – way back in 1963 – but this class of Atalanta players will fancy their chances of going all the way this year, especially after missing out in the final last term.
