Fiorentina Preview – La Viola in high spiris in spite of Inter defeat?

If you score three times on the road, the very least a team can expect is a point for their troubles. Fiorentina didn’t even manage that after an extraordinary encounter at the San Siro in their second Serie A outing of the season, somehow contriving to surrender leads of 1-0 and 3-2 as they went down 4-3 away to Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri snatching maximum points from an absorbing contest with two late goals.

Aside from leaving Milan empty handed, there were positives – not least scoring three versus the best defence in Serie A last term – for Fiorentina and their manager, Giuseppe Iachini. The latter suffering his sixth league defeat since taking charge at the tail end of 2019 (W9 D8 L6), while it was only a second in the last eleven, as the club’s resurgence under the one-time Sampdoria boss has been there for all to see.

In particular, Franck Ribery was exceptional last time out. The Frenchman laying on two of the goals, linking up well with the mercurial Federico Chiesa, before being subbed seven minutes from time. However, it is Gaetano Castrovilli who has been the standout performer thus far. The 23-year-old netting in both the defeat to Inter as well as grabbing the decisive winner in their preceding fixture: a 1-0 victory over Torino in Florence.

Sampdoria Preview – Porous reargurd contributing towards poor form?

With six goals conceded – three in each of their two matches played thus far – and no points on the board, it is a surprise Sampdoria aren’t propping up the Serie A table. That honour is shared between a newly-promoted Crotone side and Parma, on account of the Blucerchiati mustering up two goals so far. That a figure one more than the aforementioned duo, with both goals coming in last Saturday’s demoralising 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Benevento.

Losing at home to the 2019/20 Serie B champions is one thing. To do so when holding a seemingly commanding 2-0 lead is an altogether more unforgivable act. They were mighty unfortunate, though. At least that was the opinion of the Expected Goals model (xG: SAM 1.30 – 0.9 BEN), despite Sampdoria attempting less shots on the Benevento goal with the 42% possession of the ball that they seen.

Having also conceded three in their season opener away to Juventus, losing 3-0 in Turin in rather meek fashion, Sampdoria have now stretched their winless run in Serie A to six matches (D1 L5). Not that they’ve been a disappointing watch, far from it. A staggering 18 of their previous 24 league games returned Over 2.5 Goals. Among them was last season’s corresponding fixture: an humiliating 5-1 defeat in February.

Fiorentina Vs Sampdoria Betting Advice

Although they were beaten last time out, and in gut-wrenching fashion, there is a growing sense that Fiorentina are steadily improving. A top-half finish should be the bare minimum this season. Their attack is incredibly exciting and was at its full-flowing, devastating best versus title hopefuls Inter Milan. That does not bode at all well for a downtrodden Sampdoria who have conceded three in both their fixtures to date.

Fiorentina Vs Sampdoria – Key Facts

  • Five home games without incurring a single defeat for Fiorentina (W3 D2), who have won their last three such matches without conceding.
  • Six matches without a win for Sampdoria (D1 L5), who are without an away clean sheet in their last ten attempts (W4 D1 L5).
  • Goals have been a regular feature in these team’s respective matches of late. A trend borne out in their own meetings, with each of the last nine in Serie A producing both teams scoring.

The manner of the latest defeat for Sampdoria was especially galling, throwing away a two goal lead at home to promoted Benevento. A fifth loss in six in Serie A for Claudio Ranieri’s team, shipping 15 goals (on average 2.5 per game) in the process. Meanwhile, Fiorentina can boast five wins in their last eight league games stretching back into last season, winning the last three on home soil to nil. 3-0 Fiorentina.
