Fiorentina Preview – Slowly but surely under Iachini?

Back-to-back seasons contending with the threat of relegation simply isn’t good enough for a club of Fiorentina’s stature. There were some signs of progress, though, under Giuseppe Iachini. The 56-year-old’s appointment at the end of December brought about an immediate upturn in results and would culminate in the club finishing in the top-half, after a strong run down the home straight comprising four wins in six.

La Viola were a lot more competitive under Iachini. His 21 Serie A games in charge returned eight wins, as many draws and only five defeats – and a lot of those defeats were against the league’s best, running all three of Atalanta, Lazio and AS Roma close in the second part of the season. The summer arrivals of Alfred Duncan and Christian Koumare should only strengthen their claims in these tougher assignments.

Of which Saturday’s arrival of Torino does not fall into this category. Fiorentina boast an unbelievably strong record as the home side in this fixture. Ominously so, in fact, having won ten while losing none of nineteen prior Serie A meetings held in Florence. On top of this, Iachini’s men are unbeaten in four at home (W2 D2), during which they conceded only once and won each of the last two – among them a comfortable 2-0 victory over Torino.

Torino Preview – Homesick tendencies dampen all appeal?

As soon as the 2019-20 Serie A season belatedly came to a close, a collective sigh of relief could be heard all around Turin among those of a Torino persuasion. After the high of finishing in seventh the season before came a close run-in with a return to Serie B, coming home five points clear of the bottom three, in 16th, after losing more games than all bar the demoted trio of Brescia, Lecce and SPAL.

Improvements are required in most facets of their game, but particularly when playing away from home. Last season, only two teams – both of whom were demoted – averaged less points per-game in away matches than Torino (0.79 – W4 D3 L12). ‘The Bulls’ were last seen winning on their travels in Rome on 5 January, when upsetting European hopefuls AS Roma with a 2-0 scoreline.

By the time the season had finished, Torino had collected two of the last 30 available points from away fixtures, losing eight on the spin at one stage. Their plight was such that after losing 12 of their final 19 league games (W3 D4 L12), a managerial change was inevitable, with the club sounding out the services of Marco Giampaolo whose most recent post saw him last only seven games at the helm of AC Milan.

Fiorentina Vs Torino Betting Advice

These teams wrapped up last season’s Serie A endeavours in vastly differing manners. Fiorentina ended with one loss in nine matches, including four wins in their last six to see the season out with back-to-back victories at home to Bologna (4-0) and away in SPAL (1-3). All of a sudden an attack not short on firepower was firing on all cylinders, which could not be said of Torino who ended it winless in five (D3 L2).

Fiorentina Vs Torino – Key Facts

  • A strong finish to the 2019-20 season in Italy ensured Fiorentina secured a top-half finish on the back of four wins in their final six Serie A fixtures (W4 D1 L1).
  • With no away win in Serie A since beating AS Roma in Rome at the very beginning of 2020, Torino will start 2020-21 winless in ten consecutive away matches (D2 L8).
  • Torino have never beaten Fiorentina away from home in Serie A in 19 attempts (D9 L10), with Fiorentina winning 2-0 in Florence as recently as July of this year.

Each of Torino’s last four away matches featured goals for both teams, however, Fiorentina really did try to shut up shop, in particular at home where Cagliari (0), Hellas Verona (1), Torino (0) and Bologna (0) combined for one goal from July onward. Even a goal, therefore, might be beyond a Torino side which won’t look all that different from the one that was hopeless on the road last term. 2-0 Fiorentina.
