Fluminense – Can Fluminense grab the bragging rights?

At the time of writing, Fluminense currently occupy fourth from bottom in Serie A and therefore sit in one of the relegation places in the Brazilian top flight ahead of this local derby clash with Flamengo, and having suffered recent back-to-back defeats on the road, they’ll no doubt be looking forward to a return to their Maracana Stadium here.

Defeats at Bahia and Athletico PR in 3-2 and 3-0 losses isn’t the best preparation for a local derby but last time out on home turf saw Fluminense record an emphatic 4-1 win over Cruzeiro which would have lifted their spirits and gives the hosts something to build upon on home turf.

The hosts started their campaign at home though in disastrous fashion as they were subjected to back-to-back defeats to Goias and Botafogo, but they managed to bounce back with the aforementioned win over Cruzeiro.

Fluminense forwards (both with the name of Pedro) – Joao Pedro and Pedro (3 goals apiece), look the most likely to score for the hosts.

Flamengo Prediction – Can Flamengo strengthen their Libertadores spot?

Flamengo head into this local derby having won 3 of their last 4 matches overall in Serie A which include wins against Chapecoense, Athletico PR and Fortaleza, but these were all recorded at the Maracana – yes, they ground-share with Fluminense, so this fixture represents a home game for the ‘visitors’ too.

Flamengo have lost just 1 of their last 5 matches which was a 2-1 loss away at Atletico Mineiro, but this recent winning sequence has helped lift them up into contention for automatic qualification for next season’s Libertadores as they sit in 5th place but just 1 point adrift of 4th placed Santos prior to Sunday’s action.

As the Maracana is also Flamengo’s home ground where they possess a 100% winning record, this could spell further trouble for Fluminense, but the local derby factor could naturally tighten things up for this encounter.

Forwards Gabriel and Henrique (4 goals each) have scored the bulk of Flamengo’s goals to date this season and will be looking to further add to their goalscoring tallies here this evening.

Key-Facts – Fluminense v Flamengo

  • Fluminense recorded a convincing 4-1 win last time out at home
  • Flamengo have won all 4 of their matches at the Maracana this season to date
  • 1 goal has settled this fixture in the last 4 meetings between these two sides

Betting Tips Verdict

Being a local derby, I’m expecting Fluminense to give it a real go here and they should keep close to Flamengo in this clash.
