Preview: A fixture that produced eight goals at the Commerzbank-Arena last season was Eintracht Frankfurt versus Fortuna Dusseldorf. The two teams renew their rivalry once again here, with Frankfurt seeking another big victory similar to the ridiculous 7-1 scoreline managed last time around. Surely it will be a much closer affair on this occasion?

Eintracht Frankfurt Preview – The Eagles to rediscover scoring touch?

This was a lopsided match-up in last season’s Bundesliga. Home and away, Frankfurt were completely dominant as they racked up a combined aggregate score of 10-1. The bulk of those goals were scored in the home encounter, where Die Adler were at their rampant and ruthless best to score seven times in a 7-1 demolition inside their Commerzbank-Arena. For anyone interested, a repeat scoreline is rated a 250/1 chance with Bet365.

On the basis of what we have seen so far from Adi Hutter’s team, it would be a surprise if Frankfurt managed even half of that gargantuan total on this occasion. Two games in to the new league term and this is a side still to muster more than one goal in a single game, after opening with a 1-0 home win over Hoffenheim before going down 2-1 at RB Leipzig.

It would be easy to assume their early issues in front of goal are down to the loss of their lethal strike duo of last season, with both Luka Jovic and Sebastien Haller (scorers of all seven goals in this same fixture last season) moving on during the summer, but the pair were around when Frankfurt went their final six league fixtures also without scoring more than one goal in a game – a sequence that ensured they ended the season winless (D2 L4).

Perhaps they will rediscover their mojo here, facing what was clearly a favourable opponent of theirs in the previous campaign. However, the cold hard facts show one win in the last eight Bundesliga matches (W1 D2 L5), scoring one goal or fewer on every single occasion.

Dusseldorf Preview – Visitors desperate to avenge last season’s mauling?

It would be an exaggeration to claim Dusseldorf’s players are likely to be suffering from flashbacks in the build up to a fixture that brought about a humiliating outcome in the last campaign, but those still at the club who were involved in that 7-1 hammering at Frankfurt will need no reminder as to how this fixture panned out. What it should do is serve as added motivation this time around, as the team attempt to atone for that humbling defeat.

While it doesn’t excuse the performance, Dusseldorf did arrive in Frankfurt for that infamous encounter in the midst of a really poor spell of results. Confidence was already low at the time, on the back of three consecutive defeats that would subsequently become six before another point was registered. There can be no excuses regarding a lack of prior form this time around, though.

Losing 3-1 at home to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend is clearly not ideal preparation, but only a week earlier they were scoring three goals away to Werder Bremen in an impressive 3-1 victory – their fifth win in the last ten Bundesliga matches (W5 D1 L4). They have, in actual fact, scored double the amount of goals in their opening two fixtures than Frankfurt (2).

Dusseldorf haven’t merely stumbled upon their recent form in front of goal either, as this stems from last season when they managed to score at least once in all of their final eight matches. That has recently become ten consecutive games in which they haven’t failed to score in a league fixture, which, as impressive as it is, is undermined by the fact they didn’t keep a single sheet in any of them.

Frankfurt V Dusseldorf Key Facts:

  • Frankfurt have only secured maxuimum points in one of their last eight Bundesliga matches (W1 D2 L5).
  • Dusseldorf have seen all of their previous ten league games produced both team to scoring.
  • This same fixture produced eight goals last season, as Frankfurt ran up a 7-1 scoreline.

Betting Summary

Three points from two games is not the worst of returns, particularly as one of those games was incredibly tough on paper – the 2-1 defeat incurred at RB Leipzig, against a team which finished in third place last term. A lack of goals is cause for concern, however, with it now being eight Bundesliga matches in a row now in which they haven’t managed more than a solitary goal. Though this was a fixture that seen them plunder no fewer than seven goals in last season.

On paper at least, Dusseldorf would appear to be in decent shape to avenge that 7-1 humbling from the previous campaign. Five victories from their last ten league fixtures (W5 D1 L4); scoring at least one goal in each of those ten games (a feat they have also managed in their last seven away fixtures); and impressive 3-1 winners on their most recent away outing, on Matchday One at Werder Bremen.

It seems odd to suggest Frankfurt, a team who were sublime in last season’s corresponding meeting, are uneasy favourites here. Yet a team with only one win in their last eight league fixtures don’t strike me as worthy of being around 4/6. A better bet perhaps, at a slightly shorter price, is both teams to score. Dusseldorf have seen all of their last ten league contests feature both teams scoring. Furthermore, nine of those games produced three or more match goals. Therefore, BTTS & Over 2.5 Goals is worth chancing.
