Preview: Following a dip in results, Frankfurt are suddenly clinging on to their spot in the Champions League places. Three points at Deutsche Bank Park, where they remain unbeaten in 2020/21, would be a huge boost therefore, but only if they can become the first side since February to get the better of Mainz.

Eintracht Frankfurt – Eagles should appreciate return to home comforts?

What was once a seven-point buffer on fifth-placed Borussia Dortmund has been whittled down to a solitary point. Thankfully for Frankfurt (W15 D11 L5), their season run-in is markedly less demanding than that of their rivals over at Signal Iduna Park. BVB still have to tackle the teams in second and sixth before the season is out. Conversely, the Eagles won’t encounter a single opponent higher than ninth.

This isn’t to say they have it easy from here on in. Certainly not if recent results are a reliable barometer. Recent defeats away to Gladbach and Leverkusen – teams competing for European places, it must be stressed – sandwiched a fairly routine 2-0 victory at home to Augsburg, meaning they have lost more matches in the last three Bundesliga rounds than the seventeen (W12 D4 L1) that preceded them.

All five league defeats this season, however, have come when travelling. They, along with soon-to-be-champs Bayern, are the only sides to remain unbeaten on home soil thus far. Just the top two, meanwhile, can boast superior points-per-game returns on their own patches than that of the Eagles, who have earned eight wins in the last nine outings at Deutsche Bank Park, including the last three in a row.

Mainz – 05er’s looking to go nine unbeaten?

The club’s top-flight status, having competed at this level for the past eleven seasons, appeared uncertain as recently as the beginning of March. When, at the time, only a forlorn Schalke denied Mainz (W9 D8 L14) the dubious honour of occupying last place. The turnaround since then has been nothing short of remarkable then, embarking on an eight-game unbeaten period which has seen them climb up into 12th.

Six points clear of FC Koln and the relegation play-off with only three more rounds to go – though second-bottom Hertha Berlin still have a couple games in hand on everybody else – the situation now is indeed a lot more encouraging. Such has been the dramatic transformation in fortunes that the midweek stalemate with struggling Hertha Berlin, drawing 1-1 at home, was positively underwhelming.

That point made it 18 from the last 24 available. It did, however, halt a three-match winning run which included memorably beating Bayern 2-1 at Opel Arena. Meanwhile, during the Ruckrunde (second half of the German season), only the sides currently occupying the top four positions boast a better record than the 05er’s, who will have a six-game unbeaten away record (W4 D2) to preserve on Sunday.

Frankfurt Vs Mainz Betting Advice

After taking one point from the last nine on offer, the pressure has increased on fourth-placed Frankfurt who have seen Dortmund close to within a single point in fifth. Adi Hutter’s men could even move down a place should results not fall their way on Saturday, placing huge emphasis on three points at home to Mainz on Sunday. A fixture which looks more evenly matched than it might have done a few weeks back.

Frankfurt Vs Mainz – Key Facts:

  • A 2-0 scoreline in the first meeting of the season between these sides earned Frankfurt their first victory over Mainz in five Bundesliga meetings (D1 L3).
  • Frankfurt have lost twice in their past three league games (W1), more than in their previous seventeen matches in the competition (W12 D4 L1).
  • Mainz are currently on an eight-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga (W5 D3). They’ve not been beaten away from home in their last six matches (W4 D2).

Mainz are in terrific form. The 05er’s are unbeaten in eight, including a 2-1 home win over Bayern, having not lost in six away. They did lose the reverse of this fixture 2-0 but that represented their first loss against Frankfurt in five meetings, winning each of the previous three. Furthermore, the onus to win is firmly on the hosts, whereas the visitors – now six points clear of danger – can play with greater freedom.
