Freiburg – Solid hosts continue to stalk top-six?

Having made light work of dispatching relegation battlers FC Koln last time, attentions swiftly turn to the recently crowned German champions for Freiburg (W12 D8 L12) in their ongoing pursuit of European football. Consequently Christian Streich’s men moved back to within two points of seventh-placed Gladbach, current occupants of a UEFA Conference League berth, with last week’s 4-1 triumph in Cologne.

Three points from their penultimate fixture, therefore, could see them take charge of seventh place heading into the final round, should results elsewhere also fall their way. However there are a few obstacles they must first overcome. First and foremost, they are facing easily the best team in the land – a Bayern side whom they are winless in nine meetings against, losing seven including each of the last three.

Then there is the not-so-insignificant fact of Freiburg enduring four months without stringing successive Bundesliga wins together. Since a 2-1 loss at Allianz Arena to Bayern halted a run of five-straight in mid-January. Thereafter the team residing from the Black Forest have accrued more defeats than victories (W6 D3 L7) – but are unbeaten in the last three here at Schwarzwald-Stadion (W2 D1).

Bayern Munich – Champions to sign out in style?

Champions of Germany for the ninth season running. Bayern Munich (W23 D5 L4) were determined to celebrate in style last week, in which case they duly obliged with a sensational showcasing of their offensive prowess. Hansi Flick’s side dismantling Borussia Monchengladbach inside Allianz Arena, racking up six goals and a ninth clean sheet in what was their second-biggest margin of victory of the campaign.

That result was well received in these parts, with Freiburg in direct competition with The Foals for a top-six finish. This is likely where the favours end, though. Bayern, while not having it all their own way having conceded in all of the past five meetings between these sides, are seeking a fourth consecutive Bundesliga win over this weekend’s opponents, whom they edged out in the reverse fixture 2-1.

Then again, Die Rotten were surprisingly off the pace last time out on their travels. A 2-1 scoreline in Mainz represented their fourth away league defeat of the season, though did follow three straight wins at Werder Bremen, RB Leipzig and Wolfsburg – the latter two perched second and third, respectively, in the standings. Moreover, it is now 69 competitive matches in a row without failing to hit the back of the net.

Freiburg Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

One of these sides still has everything to play for as we approach the final two rounds, whereas the other is home and hosed and set for their victory parade. That isn’t to say this will be borne out in the final outcome, only that the recently-crowned Bundesliga champions are awfully short away to a Freiburg side unbeaten in three on their own patch and know a point or better would enhance their top-six prospects.

Freiburg Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • The previous three Bundesliga encounters between these sides ended in victory for Bayern Munich, who are unbeaten across eight Bundesliga meetings (D2).
  • Both teams to score has been a winning bet in all of the last five Bundesliga meetings, with Bayern forward Robert Lewandowski netting the first goal in three of the last four.
  • Freiburg have a three-match unbeaten home record to protect (W2 D1), taking on a Bayern side boasting three wins in four away from home (L1).

Dampening some of the appeal about the home side achieving a first point in this fixture since 2019 – having last celebrated a win in 2015, in a 2-1 scoreline here at Schwarzwald-Stadion – is the irrepressible desire of Robert Lewandowski to consolidate his legacy as one of the Bundesliga’s greatest ever goalscorers. The prolific Pole is one shy of the all-time record of 40 goals for a single season, set in 1971/72.
