Freiburg Preview – Can Freiburg continue their excellent run of form at home and record a rare victory over Dortmund?

Things were looking ominous for Freiburg in the first part of the season when they managed just one victory in their opening 10 league games. In the nine games since then, Christian Streich’s men have won six and drawn one which has seen them shoot up the table. Coming into this weekend’s game Freiburg sit in ninth spot and are 10 points clear of the relegation zone. Although there is still plenty of football left to play, you sense they can look forward to another year in the top-flight.

Streich will feel he can look upwards, now, and potentially qualification for Europe. They are five points behind sixth spot, which happens to be held by Dortmund.

Successive away games against Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Monchengladbach were always likely to be pivotal in Dortmund’s hope of staying in the title race so the fact they have taken no points from those two matches means it’s no surprise that they have slipped will adrift of the leaders. The gap is now 13 points between Dortmund and Bayern so focus very much switches to ensuring they finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League.

Whilst they’re still fancied to do that, unless they become harder to score against and find more consistency then there is a realistic chance they could fall short.

To indicate how poor Dortmund have been defensively, they’ve managed to keep just one clean sheet in seven matches so far this year. And that was the first match of 2021. In the six games proceeding that Dortmund have conceded 11 and it’s nowhere near good enough. There are obvious issues in the style of play and finding a balance between defence and attack.

There’s certainly no issue with form of Erling Haaland who is scoring at the rate of a goal a game in the Bundesliga. He needs support from elsewhere, though, and the next highest scorers in the squad have managed only three a-piece.

As much as Freiburg have been excellent at home of late it’s hard to ignore the trends in this fixture. Instead, I’m happy to explore the goal markets and over 3.5 looks appealing. It’s been a winner in four of Freiburg’s last six home matches and three of Dortmund’s last five in all competitions.
