Preview: Less than 72 hours after their second run out of the season in the Europa League, Wolfsburg are back in domestic action and seeking a vastly-improved performance than the one which seen them held to a goalless draw on Matchday 1 by Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile the hosts, Freiburg, can make it back-to-back wins following a thrilling 3-2 win in Stuttgart on the opening weekend.

Freiburg Preview – Home advantage could prove critical?

The hosts will try their utmost to capitalise on the potential for some weary legs in the away dressing room. Whereas Wolfsburg were pressed into Europa League duties on Thursday night, Freiburg have had an entire week to recover from their latest exertions, but also to plot how best to nullify the threat posed by the visiting team – who would finish a mere point better off in the Bundesliga last season.

Sunday also represents the second league outing of 2020/21 for Christian Streich’s team, with the first having begun in the best possible fashion with a goal inside the opening eight minutes. It was a lead which swelled to 3-0 less than five minutes into the second period, however, a spirited finish from Stuttgart saw the hosts almost snatch an unlikely point only for Freiburg to eventually hold out for a 3-2 win.

Freiburg actually lost the xG battle first time out, for what it’s worth, as they gave up a lot of good chances in a surprisingly end-to-end contest (xG: STU 2.4 – 2.13 FRE) versus the newly-promoted side. They’ll have to tighten up considerably here, coming up against more polished opposition. That shouldn’t be a problem, though: in 2019/20, only five teams collected more points from home matches (29/51 – W9 D2 L6).

Wolfsburg Preview – Midweek exertions to play a part on Sunday?

Having successfully negotiated their midweek Europa League tie with Ukrainian side FC Desna, Wolfsburg must immediately switch their attentions back to domestic commitments and, more specifically, to Sunday’s tricky assignment in Baden-Wurttemberg away to Freiburg. A fixture which at one point bore regular fruit, but has recently posed them plenty of problems.

For five straight seasons, between 2012/13 and 2017/18, Wolfsburg didn’t squander a single point away to Freiburg. The past two league campaigns have been a different story altogether; spared defeat here in February 2019 when VAR cancelled out a potential late winner for the hosts, Die Wolfe would finally succumb inside Schwarzwald-Stadion last season, falling to a 1-0 defeat in December.

There are sufficient numbers to be found, however, to suggest Wolfsburg can rediscover their winning touch in this fixture. Last season, a return of 30 points from 17 away outings (W9 D3 L5) accounted for 61 per cent of their total points, as they secured more than twice as many victories, as well as considerably more goals scored, compared with back home. They go to Freiburg with six away wins in their last eight such fixtures.

Freiburg Vs Wolfsburg Betting Advice

Sat side by side in the table come the end of the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign, it is fair to say these are two fairly evenly matched teams. It showed, too, across their pair of meetings, with Freiburg requiring a late goal to seal a slender 1-0 win at home prior to sharing four goals in the reverse fixture in a 2-2 draw. And yet there hasn’t been a drawn encounter in Freiburg since 2002 (12 games without one).

Freiburg Vs Wolfsburg – Key Facts

  • The home side, Freiburg, are currently on a three game winning run when playing at home in the Bundesliga, last managing a longer such run at the start of the 2016/17 campaign.
  • Six wins from their past eight away Bundesliga games for Wolfsburg, whose 30 points from 17 away fixtures accounted for 61 per cent of their overall points total in 2019/20.
  • A 1-0 scoreline here in December of last season, in favour of the home side, marked a first home win over Wolfsburg for Freiburg since 2013 (W1 D1 L5).

Goals could be in the offing, especially after seeing how open Freiburg were first time out versus newly-promoted opposition. Seven of the last nine league meetings at this ground produced three or more goals, though only four featured both teams on target. Wolfsburg failed to locate the goal in their opener, but that was at home to strong opposition, in the shape of Bayer Leverkusen, and this was a team last season renowned for playing better football on the road. Freiburg 2-1.
