Fulham Preview

It’s been a disastrous season for Fulham so far on their return to the top flight, and the early part of 2019 is not shaping up greatly either. Last weekend’s agonising defeat away to relegation rivals Burnley was their third straight loss since the turn of the year and each one of them has been brutal in their own way. A humbling away to Arsenal on New Year’s day might have been expected but it was toothless from Claudio Ranieri’s men, and that was then followed by an abysmal home defeat to lower league Oldham in the third round of the FA Cup. There could be an argument made that going out the cup early on and being able to focus on the league is a positive – but there’s a way of going about it and losing as they did can only be detrimental for morale. Most recently was that crucial clash at Turf Moor. A phenomenal strike from Andre Schurrle took Fulham into the lead but two own goals inflicted another defeat on the Cottagers who remain second bottom and are five points from safety. The game also gave Fulham an unwanted record as being the first Premier League team to lose a game where the opposition did not have a shot on target. Ranieri has delved into the transfer market and brought the experienced Ryan Babel to the club.

Key-Facts – Fulham v Tottenham

  • Fulham have managed to keep one clean sheet at home all season
  • Spurs have scored a league high 28 away goals so far
  • Tottenham won 3-1 when these two sides last met in August

Tottenham Preview

Spurs not only lost ground on the top two and a crucial home game at home to Manchester United last week, the defeat came at a further cost with Harry Kane being ruled out for up to two months with an injury sustained late on in the match. It’s led to much debate about how Tottenham deal with that situation and whether a replacement should be brought on. Mauricio Pochettino has never been one to go out and just buy a player for the sake of it but with Kane out and Son Heung-min now away on international duty, options up top are severely limited and the club are competing on four fronts currently. Fernando Llorente is likely to be the striker on Sunday for the visit to Fulham as Spurs attempt to get back on track following the 1-0 loss to United. As a performance it was of a very high standard and one they’ll be wondering how they never won the game let alone take a point. It’s in the past now, though, and with Chelsea to come in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final on Wednesday they face two massive London derbies in the space of a few days.

Fulham v Tottenham Betting Advice

It’s getting to the desperate stage for Fulham as well in their bid to stay up. The change in manager to Ranieri has yet to have any real impact and his team face another stern test at home to one of the best teams in the league on Sunday. Spurs are without doubt a weaker team with Kane unavailable but they still possess a lot of class and will have to adapt without their talisman, both for this match and that game at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Babel will likely go straight into the team for Fulham and his experience is going to be much needed, as well as that physical presence in attack. Fulham’s biggest problem is in defence though, and it’s well documented they have allowed the most goals in the league so far. It’s one clean sheet from 10 home games and they will have their work cut out to keep Spurs out who have scored in every single away game in all competitions this season – a tremendous record. With both of those stats, it’s almost certain that Spurs will score so Fulham’s approach has to be an attacking one which should lead to goals, and the last four meetings between the two have had three or more.
