Fulham – Scoring goals the only thing missing?

Earlier in the season, when losing eight of their first eleven league games, many were quick to consign a porous Fulham (W4 D11 L11), seemingly incapable of defending at this level, to relegation. Since then, however, the turnaround under Scott Parker has been nothing short of remarkable, losing three of fifteen top-flight fixtures (W2 D10) while seeing their average for goals conceded per game fall from 1.9 to 0.7.

The difficult task now for Parker is turning a solid defensive foundation, and a gluttony of low-scoring draws, into goals and victories. An astonishing 10 of their last 15 league matches ended in stalemate, while all-but two – their 2-1 loss at home to Man Utd and 2-2 draw away to West Brom – produced no more than two goals, which shows the influence a committed and well-organised Fulham are having on opposition.

The Cottagers were the dominant side last time, though, only for another profligate showing to let them down. They average 0.61 goals-a-game here in West London, which is a league-low, yet kept clean sheets in each of the last two said fixtures. So it augurs well, nonetheless, for another competitive display in midweek in their efforts to end a 21-game winless streak (D4 L17) in Premier League London derbies.

Tottenham – Welsh Wizard to work his magic?

The potential second coming of Gareth Bale to Tottenham (W11 D6 L8), the club with whom he rose to prominence earlier in his trophy-laden career, could be just the catalyst Jose Mourinho needs as the Portuguese looks to try and steer his team back into European contention. Spurs remain in eighth, though, six points adrift of the Champions League berths despite Sunday’s rout of Burnley.

Bale, on loan in North London for the remainder of the season from parent club Real Madrid, scored twice and laid on another in that emphatic 4-0 defeat of the Clarets, taking his tally across his last four competitive appearances to four goals and three assists. It is this level of production which adds an exciting dynamic to Spurs’ attack, potentially easing the burden on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

However, don’t be at all surprised were Bale to revert to bench duties at Craven Cottage as Mourinho looks to carefully manage the Welshman’s minutes. This scenario would undoubtedly lessen the collective threat. Tottenham had lost five of their previous six league games before the Burnley shellacking, including each of the past three on the road, having scored just three times across this dismal sequence.

Fulham Vs Tottenham Betting Advice

Since early December of last year, the only teams to have beaten Fulham in their last fifteen Premier League matches are Chelsea, Manchester United and Leicester. Only the latter of those did so by more than a single goal. All three, meanwhile, were at Craven Cottage, where they have kept a clean sheet in the last two (W1 D1) and form part of Scott Parker’s side’s current five-game unbeaten league run (W2 D3).

Fulham Vs Tottenham – Key Facts:

  • Sixteen points separate the two sides ahead of their midweek clash at Craven Cottage, where 18th-placed Fulham have seen seven of the last eight league games return Under 2.5 Goals.
  • Tottenham recorded their biggest Premier League home win since December 2019 last time, thrashing Burnley 4-0, but are seeking to avoid a fourth straight away defeat here.
  • Fulham, without a win in a London derby in their last 21 attempts (D4 L17), last beat Tottenham in March 2013. Their record thereafter reads four losses and a draw in five top-flight meetings.

Fulham are a team vastly improved from the one which looked relegation fodder earlier in the campaign. Our hosts, therefore, are capable of providing Tottenham with ample resistance. Spurs racked up more goals in Sunday’s home outing against Burnley (4) than in their previous six league outings combined (3 – W1 L5) and should find a Fulham side that has shipped a miserly 11 goals in its last 15 league games much less obliging.
