Fulham – Championship return beckons?

In the aftermath of Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat to Leicester here at Craven Cottage, Fulham (W2 D8 L11) boss Scott Parker lamented his team’s pressing need to start winning games if the club are to avoid a swift return to the second tier. Unfortunately, this undesirable outcome appears increasingly more likely with the team now eight points from safety after extending their winless run in the competition earlier in the week.

Not since defying the odds to claim a 2-1 win at King Power Stadium in November against Leicester, the side which beat them with consummate ease a few days ago, has Parker had cause for celebration. There have been improvements since, notably in defence, but it is an alarming lack of goals which is the root cause behind them failing to pick up all three points in any of their last eleven top-flight fixtures (D7 L4).

A return of eight goals from their last eleven league games, having failed to score at all on six occasions over this period, is not conducive for a successful survival bid. Meanwhile, only two teams have scored fewer than the 17 in 21 league games of Fulham, whose past five league outings here at their West London residence brought about a miserly return of one goal – a consolation in defeat to Man Utd.

West Ham – Top-four finish seemingly plausible?

The Hammers are now within two points of fourth-place Liverpool and the Champions League spots after producing yet another outstanding display. Jesse Lingard, a Manchester United loanee making his club debut at Villa Park on Wednesday, scored a brace in a 3-1 victory as West Ham (W11 D5 L6) recorded their fifth league win in six while also claiming successive wins over Aston Villa for the first time in fifteen years.

Across their last eight Premier League games, only league leaders Man City have averaged more points per game than David Moyes’s side. Reigning champions Liverpool, in a 3-1 scoreline last time out at London Stadium, were the only opponent to better them over 90 minutes during this timeframe, otherwise returning an impressive 17 points from the last 24 on offer.

Equally impressive is the fact they have registered three consecutive away victories for the first time since December 2018. Czech midfielder Tomas Soucek contributed four of their seven goals during this run, netting in each of those successes, against Crystal Palace, Everton and Aston Villa, bringing his tally for the season in the league to eight goals – that more than any other team-mate.

Fulham Vs West Ham Betting Advice

On current form there should only be one logical outcome: a West Ham victory. The club are currently riding the crest of a wave, sitting two points off the Champions League places after returning wins in five of their past six league games. Contrast that to Fulham, who occupy 18th in the table and are now eight points from safety after extending their winless run in the competition to eleven last time out.

Fulham Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • No win for eleven Premier League games for Fulham (D7 L4), who are winless in seven at home (D3 L4) since a 2-0 win over 19-placed West Brom on 2 Nov.
  • Whereas Fulham have lost their past three home Premier League games, West Ham have won all of their last three away from home, with Tomas Soucek netting in each.
  • The spoils have been that of West Ham the last three times the clubs have met in the Premier League, including a 1-0 success at the London Stadium in November.

West Ham can boast three straight away wins coming into this game, netting exactly three goals in each of the last two said matches against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace, and so should have too much about them. Fulham, on the other hand, have won only one of 11 home games all season, netting a league-low 7 in these fixtures while failing to score in four of the last five at Craven Cottage.
